I am so sick and tired of seeing ads for pitbull puppies! Pitbulls are really popular in lower income areas around here. I know perfectly well that raised in a loving environment with experienced dog handlers that these dogs are wonderful! But a lot of times it seems the #1 defenders of these "breeders" are the people who are raising their dogs right. In defense of the dog, they seem willing to overlook who these dogs are being sold to.
Just because you have kids, a house with a yard, and you don't plan to have your dog fight doesn't mean you should be allowed to have a pitbull. I'm opposed to Virginia banning the breed altogether, but I really want them to put strong regulations in place for breeders. Breeders of Pitbulls should be licensed separately. Anyone caught breeding pitbulls or pitbull mixes, should have their dogs confiscated, spayed/neutered, and pay a hefty fine.
Every time I open craigslist and other sites, I see at least 3-5 ads per day for either pitbull puppies or someone giving up their "sweet and great with kids" pitbull after a month of having it. I actually have to respect the ones giving them up that early because at least they realize it's not as easy as they thought. But it's the ones that don't give it up and brag about their pitbull chained to the their fence that infuriates me!
A few things I witnessed recently is what made me go off on this rant.
I was in Best Buy the other day looking at a flat screen tv. Two men were talking about a tv.
Man 1: "I want a bigger one so it can't get stolen so easy."
Man 2: "I got no problem with that. I got a pitbull."
Man 1: "Yeah, I need to get a Pitbull too. How much did it cost"
Man 2: "I got mine with papers for $400, but you can get one cheaper if you don't care about the papers. That kind of stuff don't matter much anyway."
The conversation got worse when they started talking about locking the dog outside when guests were over, and how dogs don't need much aside from food and water.
Then the other day while I was at the pet store, some little kid came up and was playing with my dog. He said he had a dog too. His mom tells me they have a Pitbull. The kid got all excited and was telling me how there were 5 Pitbulls on his street. I accidentally thought out loud "Wow, that's a lot of Pitbulls." The kid then went on to tell me how their neighbor always has puppies (kids really say a lot), and that they all got them from her. The mom must have seen a look on my face cause she quickly said "Oh it's not like that, she doesn't breed them for money, she just gives them away." I didn't know what to say. The mom and kid seemed really nice, but when she was commenting on how my dog was so friendly to the other dogs and people in the store and I mentioned how I socialized him well as a pup, she had no idea what socialization was.
