The only problem I ever had with the Purina Layena getting moldy is when my basement had a leak and the bags got wet on the bottom. Then it didn't spread throughout, but was just on the bottom where the bag got wet. We have a problem with high humidity in this house and if there was going to be mold because of it, I'm sure I'd have it.

I've also never had any problems with bugs or rodents because of the chicken feed and I generally have at least three bags in my basement with one open. (of course with a population of 15 cats in and out all day, I shouldn't have rodent problems.)

Lei, I am so glad that Sadie & Dexter seem to be taking to it
I know this will help put your mind at ease as far as the asthma goes
I have all the confidence in your sweet girl that she will get the hang of burying soon
A&H is the litter that we have switched from because it had become, over time, dustier.
I asked another member if she was having a problem with it's dust and she said no.
I hope that the A&H's dust problem that I encountered, is a regional manufacturing issue, so that you can continue to use it.
Over several months, I called their customer service about my concerns.
They would send a coupon for another box but unfortunately that did not address the issue of excessive dust in their litter.

WB texture is really different from clay.
I can see how a kitty would refuse it.
I did a gradual introduction.

It was only when I went all WB that Sadie became hesitant.
If she continues, I will add some clay for awhile and go from there.

If clay becomes a problem for you Tanya, try 1/3 WB and the rest clay for a month and see how it goes.

I really appreciate your support.
Because of Dexter's asthma,
this is a serious issue for us.

I feel foolish -- I had no idea that clay litter was a potential health problem! But we do have one cat who has periodic sneezing fits, so maybe we should switch, too.

My little Pearl is a big-time flinger, though -- I imagine we'll have a "corn storm" as well!

We have one of those wonderful Litter Robots, so (for that box, at least) we have to use a litter that clumps adequately during the seven-minute delay. How is the WBCL on that issue?

I imagine you could use corn litter in an auto box, but the clumps are not as super tight as the clay litter so YMMV...
I'm glad to hear that mold is not an issue. We have a pretty humid house in the summer, I may try to add some crystals if I notice I'm getting one big clump in the box. I've been keeping the bag in an old snap top Tidy Cats bucket and that seems to work well.

I don't expect to have a rodent problem upstairs where the cats are, but I was thinking a 50 lb bag is better stored in the basement
Maybe I'll get a snap top rubbermaid garbage can if I buy the big bags.

Dexter quickly modified his burying technique so that now, all he creates is a minor squall, compared to his previous corn storm.

Our kitties are very smart.

Here is a link to the WB site...

If I remember correctly, you can use it in automatic boxes.
You might want to check with the manufacture of your box to be sure it won't cause a problem.

I cannot say that that clumping clay litter definitely causes lung problems, but my personal experience is it that clay has had a negative affect on my kitties and my own lungs over time.

The is almost no dust in WB.

Let us know what you find out.

JellyBella...I like your idea of using a snap on garbage can for the larger bag.
That would protect it from moisture and pests.
I have my 17lb bag sealed off in a large gargage bag in my closet.

Thanks for the update about humidity & mold.

100% Humidity all year round here and I have no problems with the WBCL!!!

But then I didn't have a problem with the brand of wheat based cat litter (Oko Plus, I think it's german) I was using either when it comes to the humidity.

Now, if only I can get the big bags of WBCL I'd be happy!

I buy the larger ones too. At least I don't have to shop as often that way and anything that allows me to shop less is good for me.

Oh I don't mind shopping, especially if it is for the kitties, but the 34lb bags work out a lot cheaper which leaves more $$ for necessities like fluffy balls, cat grass, da bird refills...

i've been wanting to switch to WBCL to see if luxor's skin irritation is from the dust from A&H. i've put a little into 1 box, none in another, and 1/2 into the third.

luxor inspects it and wants to taste it, i hope when i go to total WBCL he doesn't pig out

I did the change gradually & it is a success...
They certainly are not as enthusiastic about digging as they were with A&H and are slightly hesitant to get into the box but my mind is made up, I am not giving in.

I love the WBCL original.
It does track but anything is better than all that dust.
Keep us updated.
No more clay.
