As many of you are aware, Anne recently posted a thread in the Feral Colonies Forum (http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...threadid=11240) about a cat named Samoa (formerly “Osamaâ€) and the Amarillo journalist, David Horsley, who reported his story. Thanks to the letters and hard work of many people, including TCS members but especially Laurie (LDG) and her husband Gary, Samoa has been trapped and is now being resocialized to prepare him for adoption.
As a consequence of this story, we (Laurie, Gary and I) have been aiding Judi Glidewell, an Amarillo business woman and rescue worker, to prepare a presentation for the Amarillo City Council to institute a low cost spay/neuter program and potentially to support TNR (trap/neuter/return) programs in Amarillo. Hard information about the economic, social, and ecological benefits of these sorts of programs is available on the Internet; but it is sparse, dispersed and out of date. What is known is that approximately 15 million animals are euthanized each year, at a cost to the states of about $50 million, mostly in direct costs that come from taxes. Most appeals rely on heart-rending stories, but governmental agencies donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t respond to emotions. Money is what talks.
We plan to create an organization and related website, to be a resource for groups and communities that want to institute low cost spay/neuter and/or TNR programs. The site would provide links to previously reported research, as well as more recent studies. Hopefully, by focusing on the economic rather than emotional angle, we will increase the chance that these programs will be instituted.
However, the first thing we need to come up with is a name. One name we have come up with is Animal Rescue Resources. Whatever the name ends up being, it needs to reflect the purpose of the website as an informational resource. We are asking the TCS community for suggestions for a name. This is an issue that many here feel strongly about, and it is because of this site and Anneâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s post, that the idea for this site has come up. Any suggestions are appreciated!
