Suggestions needed from TCS members

Fellow TCS members,

As many of you are aware, Anne recently posted a thread in the Feral Colonies Forum ( about a cat named Samoa (formerly “Osamaâ€) and the Amarillo journalist, David Horsley, who reported his story. Thanks to the letters and hard work of many people, including TCS members but especially Laurie (LDG) and her husband Gary, Samoa has been trapped and is now being resocialized to prepare him for adoption.

As a consequence of this story, we (Laurie, Gary and I) have been aiding Judi Glidewell, an Amarillo business woman and rescue worker, to prepare a presentation for the Amarillo City Council to institute a low cost spay/neuter program and potentially to support TNR (trap/neuter/return) programs in Amarillo. Hard information about the economic, social, and ecological benefits of these sorts of programs is available on the Internet; but it is sparse, dispersed and out of date. What is known is that approximately 15 million animals are euthanized each year, at a cost to the states of about $50 million, mostly in direct costs that come from taxes. Most appeals rely on heart-rending stories, but governmental agencies don’t respond to emotions. Money is what talks.

We plan to create an organization and related website, to be a resource for groups and communities that want to institute low cost spay/neuter and/or TNR programs. The site would provide links to previously reported research, as well as more recent studies. Hopefully, by focusing on the economic rather than emotional angle, we will increase the chance that these programs will be instituted.

However, the first thing we need to come up with is a name. One name we have come up with is Animal Rescue Resources. Whatever the name ends up being, it needs to reflect the purpose of the website as an informational resource. We are asking the TCS community for suggestions for a name. This is an issue that many here feel strongly about, and it is because of this site and Anne’s post, that the idea for this site has come up. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thank you,
Christy, Laurie (and Gary)

This organization/website sounds like a terrific idea!!! It will help so many people to start programs like those you mentioned!!! I can't think of a good name right now, though....but I will think about it, and also I am sure others here can come up with some good ones!!!

It is great that you all are doing this!!! Good job!!!!!!!!

Christy - I think we finally stumped The Cat Site Members! I came up with some ideas. I'm not wild about any of them.

Stray Animal Research and Advocacy
Stray Animal Management Resources
Animal Control Research and Advocacy
SPAY Research

Maybe we should start with an acronym we like and figure out words to fit it! Here are some acronyms - anyone with word ideas for the letter?

S.P.A.Y. Stray Pet something somthing

or S.P.A.R.E. Stray Pet and Animal Research Education

S.P.A.R.E.S. Stray Pet and Animal Research Education for Sterilization

S.A.V.E. This one we could work into saving lives and saving dollars - ummmm Sterilization And ..... no Save Animals vit Education - sorry

oh - BTW - Happy Birthday Christy!

I kinda like Animal Control Research and Avocacy, but I agree that having a snazzy acronym like SAVE or SPARE might make the site more memorable.

Here are some ideas:

SAVE-Saving Animals Via Education
FACT-Feral Advocacy and Cat ?
FACE-Feral Advocacy and Cat Education
HEART-Helping Educate about Animal Responsibility and ?
PEGASUS-People Educating Governments About Sterilization, Unowned animals and Strays?

I'll try and think of more during the day.

ps-Thanks for the birthday wishes. 32 is such a strange age, not really an important one. I'm just taking it easy this year, and having dinner with a friend. Maybe I'll party all night when I turn 35.

One thing you want to do is make sure the domain name is available (I would get both the .com and .org varieties)! I have a feeling we are going to be in touch quite a bit. I am working on a very similar effort with the Israeli Cat Welfare Society. Creating fact sheets and the like for people to use.

Question about the name - are you working on cats only or all animals? or all pets? For cats only I might go with one of the purr-fect expressions. For animals I'll be thinking, paws, tails etc. A few things that come to mind:

Educat /Purrsasion (for cats)

Pawsitive Action

Furward Action

or you could go with something around Samoa as he was the one who started it all. The Samoa fund?

You have some great ideas already. Maybe you could use parts of both an acronym and a catchy name. Like S.A.V.E a Life Foundation (SAVE-Saving Animals Via Education like you mentioned). I like Anne's idea of The Samoa Fund/Foundation, and then you can tell his story to every person who visits your site. Don't mean to get political, but how about a play on one of Bush's initiatives. "No Animal/Pet Left Behind"

I've been thinking on this all day, and that's about all I can come up with.

It IS a bit of a stumper - thus the thread!

We've got a great start going (Christy - that was too funny I couldn't come up with the word "via"! )

Keep 'em coming! ???

Cat (or Feline) Care and Control

C.A.T.S. Cats. A timid species.

Quick question for you. The name should obviously be reflective of your purpose. Are you guys focusing on just cats, mainly cats, or all pets?

How about F.E.R.A.L.S. with something like Feline Education, Realistic Animal Law Support. (OK, so the wording isn't great. Forgive me, it's still early!)

Towns and cities think of animal control in terms of pets - principally dogs and cats. However, the stray/feral population control problems are principally cats. So the answer is that while we will focus on cats, there will probably end up being info on both dogs and cats, as spay/neuter and euthanisation programs affect both.

Thanks all!

Here's some suggestions:

C.E.N.T.E.R. cat,education, advocacy, research, education,on reproduction
F.E.R.A.L.S. feline, education, research, and local support
C.A.R.E.S. Cat advocacy, research, education, support
F.A.C.T. feral advocacy and community training
or For Animal Community Training and Spaying
I'm still thinking of more. I hope this might help.
