Hey everyone. I am really worried about my kitty right now. I noticed that she had slept in the same spot from very early in the afternoon until late tonight, so I woke her up before I was going to go to bed. When I woke her up, she wouldn't open her eyes. I finally got her to open them briefly, and they're both all cloudy. She was perfectly fine until tonight, I have no idea what happened or what could be wrong.

This is the one who has had irritable bowel and we have had her on antibiotics for the past week because she had a really bad bout of it, so I know it can't be a reaction to that because we've been giving it to her for a week now. And she has had it before. But yesterday I gave her an injection of B12 - it was the first one I had done myself - and she had gotten one a week earlier at the vet's office. I am wondering if I could have done the injection wrong or if it is too much B12 because that's the only thing that has changed.

She acts like it hurts to open her eyes so I tried wiping them and she acted like that really hurt a lot. When she opens her eyes, it's just for a very brief period, and it's worse when there's a lot of light. She can't keep her eyes open then. Other than that, she is acting fine.

I am really worried about her and not sure what to do right now. Any insight would be helpful! Thank you!

Oh my that sounds really scary. I would think it's the B12 shot. I would hop on www.dogpile.com and do a search for the side effects of B12. I hope she gets to feeling better asap. I think you better make a call into the vet too.

It could be a number of things. It could be the B12 or it could be she was already developing cateracts. I had a cat who devleoped cateracts very quickly. She needs to be seen by a vet.

Thanks guys, I will definitely be calling the vet tomorrow. (Not open on Sundays, unfortunately.) Her left eye looks better today but her right eye still looks weird. Her eyes are usually a deep blue and now they're a greenish color. It seems like it's been one thing after another with her lately, I feel so bad for her!

Well, Abby appears to be fine now... her eyes are back to their normal color and she doesn't act like they hurt anymore.
I still took her to the vet just to be sure she was ok and the vet didn't find anything wrong. Talk about weird!!

So glad that she is doing better. Did the vet think it was from the B-12 or did he/she not say anything about it..

How scary! And your vet didn't find anything?

I've got 2 cats on B12 injections that I give here at home, and I've always been told that B12 won't harm them in any way. If they should get too much, then they just get rid of the excess.

What antibiotic was Abby taking?

The vet said that it was highly unlikely to be the B12 shot, but to keep an eye on Abby after I give her the next one (which will be on Friday), and if it happens again then something has to be going on.

The antibiotic Abby was on was called metronidazole, also known as flagyl. She's been on it before so I can't imagine that would be the problem. But then again, you never know!

She seems to be doing so much better now, she's back to her old self again.
That whole eye thing still baffles me though!

I just wondered about the antibiotic because I know that Baytril can cause blindness if it's given in too high a dose. I've never heard of any side effects in the eyes with metronidazole though. Hopefully it was just a fluke and Abby won't have any more problems.

Really?? That's good to know because she has been on that before also and I hadn't heard that before. Thanks for the info, and the warning!
