I just saw the movie 300 last night. It was incredible. One of the best movies I have seen for a long time. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, it is basically just a comic that has been turned into a movie that is loosely based on the Persian war. The battle scenes in it were some of the best I have ever seen and unlike many war movies set in that time, this one actually has a good story. It's an amazing action movie with a few comedic parts in it. So if you like action movies with a bit of history, comedy and fantasy in them, you should go see it when you get the chance.

i would like to see that, lol from the perviews i dont think they did it from a history stand point, which would be much better for me, that is unless frank miller stoped writing comics and moved into writting history.

that ok i enjoy a good sword fight movie,

I caught a couple of interviews with star Gerard Butler this past week. I don't think I'll be able to see it in the theaters (I can't sit too long because of my back) but the promos looked interesting.

And the Spartans are nice to look at.
Here is a pic of Gerard Butler as King Leonidas.

Unfortunately I also giggled a bit because every time they say Persians I think of cats.

Actually there were a lot of cultures that did, completely nude even. Clothing could be forced into a wound when stabbed and could cause infection.

Well the in original Olympic games they competed naked

Anywho, yes, we've been looking forward to going to see 300, but we're holding off until the IMAX here gets it going in a couple weeks.

I agree, it was one of the best movies of that type I've seen.

It is based on Frank Miller's 300, a full-length graphic novel, which is also fantastic and if you like graphic novels, the movie is stylized to be like it. (Sin City, Batman, and Daredevil are also a Frank Miller graphic novels / comics). (sorry, but to big geeks like me "just a comic" is sacrilege)

This theatre made you be 21 to buy a ticket though, and for good reason. The one scene would be pornographic if they showed you any bits, and something about blood hitting the screen is disgusting. The violence is on a par with Quentin Tarantino...

Anyway, there was one part where everyone in the whole theatre clapped and cheered.

I loved Frank Miller's 300 - because I am a history buff and it is basically taken from the contemporaneous historical accounts of the battle of Thermapolai! I am half looking forward to, and half dreading this film. I want it to be as true to the original historical source that Miller's cartoon was. As an archaeologist and ancient historian who has studied that period, I will be gutted if they change it in any way - because the history of that period, and especially that battle, does not need to be exaggerated in order to make it breathtaking.

If it has in any way been tampered with I will not be a happy bunny

(ETA: yes I was one of those who after watching Gladiator sat down with my similarly historically-obsessed mates and picked 2000 or so holes in it
)

ETA AGAIN: because I'm on a roll now - has anyone seen the 1960's film 300 Spartans?

Go ahead and see it, Epona! Just take your notebook to record all the errors. (Half the fun of some historical movies.)

Oh I will definitely see it! And yes despite the huge historical bloopers in many *ahem* "historically based" films, I do love seeing them. You are right that half of the fun is in spotting the goofs
I am sure I will enjoy it, I will either think it's a brilliant historical drama or I will gain great pleasure from comparing notes with other history buffs

lol yep i was one of those also. i get told i pick apart movies all the time.
but dang it, if they are going to make movie from history, or for that matter from a book, leave it alone. and just do it the right away.

but since they are basing on millers comic, i can live with it, just give me some good sword fights.
