I have heard similar stories, and often put them in the "urban legend" category. Unfortunately, I've learned today that it has happened in my town.
On Monday, an obscure "charitable organization" distributed yellow plastic containers, and requested that people donate old clothing and shoes, and put the containers on the curb Wednesday morning. The containers were collected yesterday, but so, apparently, were quite a number of cats. Our shelter is still getting reports of missing cats, far too many for it to be a coincidence.
Who knows what will happen to them, but suspicions are that they will be sold to laboratories, or producers of "arthritis blankets" made of cat fur.
Laboratories won't normally buy cats who have some sort of identification, but if the cat has already been "catnapped", he/she is still doomed.
If you let your cats outdoors, please have their ears tattooed in an obvious fashion, and have them micro-chipped. Put the microchip ID tag on your cat's collar.
