So I got two cats from the shelter yesterday. The 1 year is fine plays etc. The 2 year old is overweight (and missing an eye due to a birth defect) and while I was clipping her nails tonite I noticed that she seemed to not want me to touch her paws but she seemed really sensitive about the back ones. I looked closer and some of her nails were dry and on the back paws they seem to be separating from the nail and there was all this dry scaley skin around the nail area and some brown spots on the palms of her paws. Poor baby and her I was thinking she was lazy (which I suspect she is on some level because of her weight) and that's why she didn't want to play (she follows Da Bird and toy mice etc with her eyes but she won't chase them). Yes, I am scheduling a vet visit within the next few weeks (she's eating - she off Science Diet and on canned food, pooping and peeing so she's doing well) but I was just wondering if anyone had a clue what this is and how to make Frenchie more comfortable meanwhile.

Cats nails "shed" by flaking off the outer sheaths. What you're seeing may be normal, though it is difficult to tell without seeing it. What color are her feet? Willow's paw pads are both pink and black, and Odo's are pink with dark brown splotches. It's just part of their color patterns, but again, I don't know if the same holds with your kitty. A vet visit for a new cat is always a good idea.

Her feet are pink with brown spots, basically it is fact that she was really sensitive about her feet and didn't want me to clip the nails which makes me think something is up. She was much more relaxed about the front paws (now I had her on a cat bed in my lap stroking her and she was getting sleeply) but like I said it looked like the toes were separating from the nail and the toes were really scalely and white. I'll try and take pictures and post them on Sat.
