Lucy was back at the vet's tonight. This time we saw our own vet. Again, her heart is strong, lungs sound clear and her temp is normal. However, our vet says Lucy is more or less blind. Her eyes are dilated and virtually unresponsive to light
We had an idea that she was probably going blind after her major illness in 2005 as since then she sniffs everything from her food dishes (not the food the actual dish itself), to our clothes if we place them on the bed getting dressed/undressed to us even when we stroke her, so I wasn't really surprised to hear that. Our vet thinks she can still see shadows. It hasn't put her off jumping onto high places and she never misses. However, our bedroom is fairly small so we don't move the furniture around so she knows where everything is.
She was given a shot of Millephyline to try and clear her nose and I have been given a similar medicine to mix with her food. Unfortunately, we are having to syringe feed her just now. We did that last night and she managed to take about 5 or 6 syringes of food. It also had the effect of making her sneeze and splutter a bit and I think it helped to clear her nose. She was a bit brighter this morning and isn't sneezing so much. The clear discharge from her nose seems to have dried up a bit too.
Our vet is worried that she's taking strokes and thinks her blood pressure could be high so she has to go back Friday to get it checked. How do they check a cat's blood pressure? If her BP is raised, that brings the question of is she going into renal failure as the kidneys control blood pressure.
I would shift heaven and earth for Lucy but how far do I go in keeping her with me? She's a very old cat and I know whatever happens her time is very short on this earth now, but being totally selfish, I don't want to let her go.
