I haven't posted in a while, but needed some grief relief.

My 17 year old boy Toby was diagnosed with diabetes 2 years ago. After treating him successfully for all this time he began to stop eating. A few weeks ago he had a hypoglycemia attack. He spent 2 days in emergency care and bounced back. We thought he would last forever. That was short lived and he began to not eat and kept losing more and more weight. I took him in and the vet felt a lump in his abdomen indicating tumor. I tried treating him with medication because he could not handle chemo. After watching him deteroriate every day, my husband and I have made the decision to set him free this evening. This is the most difficult decision I have ever had to make. I cannot bear to see him in pain anymore.

I am proud to say that his picture actually made it as a meowhoo wallpaper. He was January 2004. Good bye sweet Toby, I miss you already.

Thank you.

What a difficult decision you had to make, but it was for the better. Toby is now playing over the Rainbow Bridge, free of pain. May he RIP.

I am so sorry that you have to make this difficult decision for your dear Toby. Like many here, I too know how hard this is to make.

Rest in peace Toby. There are some great kitties across the bridge waiting for you. You will be beautiful with your angel wings.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. It really helps. We have been back from the vet for about 3 hours and I have already broke down twice.
One thing the vet said to me was that Toby was not going to get better which kind of put me at ease because I was still feeling very guilty about this decision.

One thing I thought was nice is the vet's office gave a paw print plaque for a memorian. I thought that was nice.

I do have 2 other sweet boys that are going to need my attention as they will be grieving as well.

Thank you again.

I am so sorry .... I know it must be so hard. Keep coming here and being with like minded people who understand your heartache. And love on your other kitties, too, they will help you through this grieving process and you will help them grieve, too.

Having to let your baby go must be one of the hardest decisions to have to make
But as hard as it was you gave Toby a quality of life and one day he'll thank you for it

That was lovely for the vet to do his paw print for you

Awww bless you, it sounds as if he was ready to go and you did the kindest thing for him. Take some consolation in knowing that he had a good long life and was very much loved. RIP Toby.

What a difficult decision to have to make.
But I'm sure Toby is running freely over the bridge, happy and healthy now - sending his love to you for such a wonderful life.

Boy, this is so hard. Just when I think I'm starting to feel a little better, I break down again.

The hardest thing was my helping my husband. This was his buddy and he said it was so weird waking up in the morning and not seeing Toby there. He always called him "buddy" for every day for 17 years. My husband also said he was hallucinating and thought that Toby jumped up on the bed. It was probably one of our other cats, but I wish it was him too.

I think I'm going to take a few days off of work to help grieve. I was going to wait till Saturday to take Toby in, but didn't want to make him suffer for four more days. That is why we took him in on Tuesday.

How can I make this easier.

Thank you everyone.

One thing that always helps me when I am sad about Sambo is just to remember all the good times that we had with him. And probably the main thing is I always think how Sambo is healthy again, he can see again, and he can run around again like he used to when he was younger. When I think of how healthy he is, I always feel better.
