1 mile-2 mile-3 mile....Which to start?

Ok I am out of shape and want to start exercising again. Now the easiest thing to start is walking or jogging. Well walking and move up to jogging but my question is how many miles to start with to get back into the swing of things and for how long at that amount?

Second for this week I will start this where I live but come next Monday (I don't have the gas right now) I will start going to the old H.S track to walk and jog. So my question is on a standard H.S track how many laps equal a mile?

Also should I eat lunch before or after a jog/walk?

I believe a standard track is a 1/4 mile so 4 laps would be 1 mile. As for how far to go I'd say go as far as your comfortable with...just remember you have to walk back home.

For this week I will walk from my house to one mile marker turn around walk to the other mile marker and back home. So that will be 1 1/2 miles. When I start going to the H.S. I'll be driving there and back so it should not be to bad.

Get yourself a pedometer. They are fairly inexpensive. YOu want to know how many steps you are taking-wear it all waking hours.
Good luck on your quest to improve.
Remember to stretch out after walking and only increase distance 10%/week.

Start small and work your way up. Depending on how out of shape you are, you may need to start less than a mile. Your body will tell you when it's had enough, but don't be afraid to push it.

A pedometer is a great idea but so is a heart monitor. It's a great way to monitor your progress. As you build up your stamina, you'll notice you'll have to walk/run faster and longer to reach your target heart rate.

I'd recommend buying a heart monitor, determine your ideal heart rate, and walking/running a certain amount of time while you are at your ideal heart rate. For instance, try walking 30 minutes. Walk for 15 minutes out and then 15 minuntes back. Adjust more or less as needed.

I hope this helps.

I wouldn't start off more than a mile at first, you need to make sure you don't over do it.

Good luck with your walking.

This summer, I also wanted to start walking to get some exercise in to help with my health. I started with a mile (which took me 30 minutes) and then slowly built up over a month and a half to walk 4 miles at a time in 1 hour 15 minutes give or take some.

It is always best to start small but aim big! It is great that you want to start getting in some exercise
