Hello,
This is the first time I've been here. I wasn't sure where to post this so here it goes. I don't have a cat, but my house smells like one that has sprayed somewhere. I think a stray cat got inside and sprayed somewhere in my house. There are 2 places that have a strong odor. We cleaned the one room (vacuumed, mopped, ect.), but didn't find any clue where the smell was coming from. It's a bit better, but still stinks. The other place isn't as strong, but the smell is pretty annoying especially since I don't know what to do about it. I don't have a black light to help me find out where the smell is actually. Does anyone have any other tips that I could try? How about incense? Does that help?

Krista,

First, welcome to TCS!
I hope that some of us can help you.

What about Fabreeze or something similiar or Lysol?
I'd recommend airing out the place while spraying something like that.
Also - do you have carpet? It may be worth hiring a professional cleaner. Cat urine is a strong scent and if that is what you are dealing with and it has still not gone away, its pretty down deep, under the carpet pad I'd guess if you have carpet.

My cats don't pee on the carpet so I am not sure what remedies that smell beyond what I already mentioned. I'm sure someone here will come along soon and give some advice!!

You'll need an enzyme cleaner made for cat pee, I would also buy a black light so you can see where the spray is.

Yes, get a black light to find out where there might be cat urine. The urine spots will glow. When you've found it, you can clean it with an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle (found at Petsmart/Petco). Read the instructions. It will smell worse until the cleaner dries. You may need to reapply several times. Good luck.

I would also recommend nature's miracle but you can also get urine gone which comes with a black light. I have seen it at Target for 20 bucks.

There's no place like home
Burning incense isn't going to eliminate the smell - it will only cover it up for a short time and it will come back. You need to find the source of the odor, and if that means purchasing an inexpensive black light, then you must do so.

I have no idea what kinds of stores you have in Saudi Arabia. Do you have anything that caters to pets? If so, they can probably recommend a good cleaner that is odor neutralizing. If you don't, do a google search for products like Nature's Miracle, Zero Odor or Urine Gone.

Hi,
My rooms are ceramic tiling so it was pretty easy to clean that yesterday. We looked for some kind of mark hoping to find where to smell was coming from but didn't see anything. I have big rugs that cover the tiling, but the smell isn't on them.
I guess I'll have to try to get a black light. My husband doesn't know what one is though (he probably does, but I didn't explain it well enough). I'm sure they have them here. There are pet stores here too so maybe we'll have to hit one of them to get something. So, the only way to get rid of the smell is to find the source? It's much better than it was so maybe we cleaned some of it.
It's funny. I've had cats before (I had one here in Saudi) and didn't have too many allergies. But with this, I'm not only having the usual runny nose and eyes, but a touch of asthma on top of it. I guess that's why I came here and bothered you all. It's so nice of all of your responses. Thank you so much.

Krista

ps. It also helped airing out the house. We left both doors open so we could get a breeze through. I was worried that the cat would come back and do some more of its' business though.

I understand that white vinegar also helps, if you have some of that handy.

And about your asthmatic reaction: from what I hear lately, they've found that people often have allergic responses to one cat, but not another -- depending on the individual chemistries, I guess. Maybe that's why you didn't have such a problem before...

I'm hoping that it's not a problem. I would like one day to get another cat. Maybe when my kids are bigger. I got my hands full with them at the moment. Plus, kids tend to make cats mean and I want a nice friendly cat.

The smell has gotten better today. I let the house air out some more. Maybe the smell was coming in from the other room. I can't think of another kind of animal that could get in the house and spray besides a cat.
