Ok all I have a ? Runtz has a issue. I brush her often like alot but now she is matting. I mean she looks like she has a few dread locks in her mane. All the fur around her face. She looks like a lion in real life but is a cat. It is one of Skittles kittens and she has more fur then a Persian does.

Here is her picture.

You really need to comb her everyday, a brush doesn't get into the fur enough.

If she'll let you cut out the matts, you can slide the comb under the matt and cut along it. this is so you don't accidentally cut her skin.

You know what I have for cats who don't like grooming and it seems to work? Very tiny fairly quiet battery operated clippers. I let the cat sniff it, then leave it turned on for a little bit while I am holding or petting the cat. All the while feeling where I need to clip first. Then eventually, depending on the cat's reaction, I will grab the clippers and shave off the matts.

I have had really good luck and I think they cost $5.99 at PetSmart. but really try to comb thru her fur on a regular basis if possible. Leave her combs out and the clippers at all times so she is used to the sight of them.

Combing is the way to keep the mats/dreads out unless you want to shave constantly. She may not be so pissed about it if you have the mats removed by shaving and then start combing. Right now if you're trying to comb through the mats it is hurting her. They key is going to be to get rid of them (by pulling them apart gently with your fingers or having them shaved) and then after that prevent them by combing.

I comb every other day good she loves it. Then I saw these mats. I was going to try a detangler but they are bad. Like dread locks I cut 1 or 2 out but the other 3 r still there. I am not sure if it is because it is winter coat sheading or what. I will try to shave it out then comb she hates to be handled she is a free bird. You can pet and rub never pick up or handle not a lover.

How do I explain this? Here goes:

1. Comb her through from the spine downwards.
2. When you hit a mat, don't cut through horizontally but cut through vertically. Does this make sense? In other words, the scissors go down following the coat not across.
3. Once you've broken up the mats, comb through the area again until you hit another mat.
4. Repeat. Slowly but surely, you can get rid of all the mats.

PS. Runtz looks like she needs a bath - she looks over oily and maybe that's why she's matting!

Hope this helps!

It is in her mane the fur around the neck only. I do brush her and she gets a bath not offten. When I brush her she does get oily. That the bad part. But she is so beautiful.

Just don't bathe her when she has matts, it will make them worse.

She'll get over it. Mine always do! Just tell her what I tell Peaches, Jake and Jazzy.... "That's the price of being so beautiful!"

I feel your pain. Jazzy hates being groomed the most out of my 3 and he's got the most fur! I just have to do a little at a time with him. Just keep working at it. In the long run, it will pay off.
