Emma had an abrasion on her leg and I took her to the vet Saturday and it's some sort of allergies. Some long word with dermatitis on the end. He gave her a shot of steroids and it's already looking better. He said it it common in cats. Does anyone have any information? I'm curious to know more. Thanks.

Is there anything specific you would like to know? With cats and allergies, it's not really like people. People tend to get itchy eyes, runny nose, etc. With cats and dogs, it tends to come out in the skin. It can be a food allergy, contact allergy, or an inhaled allergy. Thier skin will start to itch, they will lick or scratch the area. If it's persistant you can have an allergy test done to find out whats causing it. If it's seasonal or contact, you can usually trace it to the source and eliminate it. It's not a good idea to keep them on steroids for long periods of time unless it's necessary. It's always better to find out if you can eliminate the source and then go from there.
