Many people here have mentioned the best cat toys are free. Well, this one is not free but if you happen to have a retractable tape measure it is. I have a 12 foot long tape measure with a button on the side to retract it. By pushing the retract button quickly, you can retract the tape an inch or two at a time. So I decided to glue some feathers on the end of the tape. Pull the tape out to its full length of 144 inches you can retract the tape 70-100 times before you have to pull the tape out again. Pull the tape out and sit in your easy chair and wait for your cat to arrive upon the scene and the fun begins! Of course I do let them catch the feathers now and then so they can have the satisfaction of the "kill" but if you want to see some zany cat behavior try this one for sure!

yay! that's a great idea!
My cat loves to push around random things and i've been trying to think about toys i can get her. I have a tape measure laying around so i can definitely do that. Thanks for the idea!

Far far away!
My cat is so afraid of the tape measure! I decided one day to play with him with it and pulled it out a few feet and put it by him. He freaked out and ran away! I tried to do it again a different time and had the same reaction! LOL. Oh well!

I must try that one. Blossom has all the toys in the world but prefers to play with scrunched up paper, a good one to get her attention. Clothes pegs, & any old thing lying around the floor. I'm going to get a laser light, I believe cats love to chase the beam.

I'm always afraid they'll try to bite it or something and cut themselves on the really sharp edges.

I forgot to mention the tape was made of cloth. It is one you get at like a fabric material store, not hardware store so there would be no sharp edges.
But it's like the metal ones that can be retracted and controlled with a push button. And when you let your cats catch the end they can pull it back out for you so you never have to get up, just sit and push the button! Gives the cats all kinds of fun exercise but I can just sit and relax.

Ooh fun. I've never seen the retractable cloth ones, I have a metal one that they seem interested in but I dont let them play with it for very long.
