How much wet food to start out with?

Hi Everyone,

It will be one week tomorrow since we adopted Boomer & he is doing great. I tried to keep him w/the same food they were feeding him at the rescue team which was Iams/Eucanuba Lamb & Rice. I couldn't find just Lamb & Rice so I bought the sensitive stomach Lamb & Rice food. He has been on that all week with no problems - goods stools, no vomitting etc.

Today I purchased the Natural Balance Venison & Pea (both wet & Dry). I'm going to incorporate those instead of the Eucanuba. I just started with the wet first - I just gave him one good sized tablespoon & he devoured it so I gave him another. It looks like he ate 1/2 the can (6oz) and he licked the bowl clean!

My question is how much should I give hime to incorporate the wet into his diet the gentliest way? He would have eaten the whole can had I given it to him & I felt so bad I didn't because he really wanted more. He doesn't really seem to care for the Eucanuba but he eats it. Anyway, they had said at one point they thought he had food allergies when he was very sick but that it cleared up once they put him on the IAms. When I picked him up, they actually gave me Royal Canin food instead of the Iams because PEtco didn't have the Lamb & Rice. So I went to another pet store & bought the eucanumba Lamb & Rice for sensitive stomach figuring it was the same thing since they are the same company. I'm just wondering if maybe his issue wasn't true allergies but rather food ntolerances. We'll see how he handles the wet I just gave him.

My second question, is how do you store the unused canned/wet food? Okay to store it in the fridge? And for how long?

Thanks again so much for your advice. I have to say, Boomer is just such an awesome cat. He is such a love bug & just such a lovable cat. I really don't know how anyone could have abandoned him and I'm just so grateful the rescue team rescued him before it was too late. Thanks again,

Laura (and Boomer!)

I don't know about everyone else, but I feed about 1.5 oz (half a 3oz or 1/4 6oz) per cat, twice a day. They eat some dry between wet meals.
If you want to switch you cat over to all wet follow the feeding instructions (should be on the can?) for his weight and age.

They make the plastic can toppers, they may be in the food section at petsmart or petco. They're also sold in nearly every grocery store, walmart, and kmart.
After a couple days in the fridge the wet food is a off (smells odd to me by then) and not generally liked as well. Warm it up a little in the microwave before serving, cold food doesn't settle on kitty tummies very well.

I would try the half a six oz a day first ( two or three meals) with dry .... The natural balence is a OVERALL BETTER food than the Iams or Eukanuba ... I like it over Raoyal canin in cases of suspected allergies

Thanks so much. He really loves the wet. I gave him the other half of the can this morning (about 3 good sized tablespoons). He was actually waiting! LOL!

After feeding him, I went to clean his box & noticed he had soft stools. SO I'm assuming this is just his system getting accustomed to the better foods. I felt bad for giving him more this morning but he actually eats this stuff with gusto vs how he ate the dry iams. I do have the dry out for him during the day & will give him more wet later on. After he gets use to the wet, I'll begin incorporating the Natural balance dry & wean him off the iams for good.

Thanks again for your thoughts & advice! Have a great Sunday.

Laura

Thank you. I'll look for those toppers. I didn't even think to look for it yesterday. I did warm up the leftover food this morning because I figured it couldn't be good for his tummy to eat something so cold first thing. I'm so glad he's liking it. I was a little nervous buying the case of food thinking there could be a possiblity he would hate it.

Have a great day!
