Hi,
I have 2 cats, a 2year old and a 1.5year old. Both have never been sick and I've had them since they were born. They were both looked at by vets shortly after I got them and the vet said they were fine. They are both indoor cats and never go outside, nor does anyone come over my house.

My older cat started sneezing and had a watery left eye about a month ago, she stopped these a couple weeks ago. I was thinking it was my new air fresher giving her problems. Now my other cat has a watery left eye and is sneezing.

Any ideas? I really cant afford a vet bill at the moment.

It's hard to tell, but it sounds like an upper respiratory infection (URI). It's like a "cold". It can't be transmitted between humans and cats, though. URIs are pretty contagious from cat to cat though, like the common colds we get. The germs can come into your house on your clothes or hands.

They're typically viral but the vet would probably prescribe antibiotics, as they can easily turn into a bacterial infection. At my vet, the bill would be about $60 but your mileage may vary. I do hope they get to feeling better soon.

Depending on where you live, there may be a low cost clinic around. At my vet it would be $20-30 medication included.

It seems like once a year the "cold" makes its rounds in all our cats, or at least most of them. They sneeze and have watery eyes for a few days then get better, this last round Angel started out like the rest but I could soon see she was feeling much worse than the others and she acted like she had a higher than normal temp so I took her in and the cold turned into a bad infection in her upper respiratory and affected one of her eyes, A dose of antibiotics fixed her up in a few days.

I am not a vet or any kind of expert on this stuff but I wouldn't get to worried unless they don't show improvement in a few days or they start to sneeze green/yellow junk out and seem to act like they have a fever. But don't take what I said as expert advice, I am just saying what I have learned from our cats over the last couple years.

When Tuffy had bad fevers before he died and when Angel had a fever the both of them would lay down but they would be upright with there legs folded under them and they would just lay like that with there head hanging down. My hands are real temperature sensitive and I could tell when Angel licked my hand that her tongue and her breath felt real warm compared to normal. Angel would also sit in front of the heat outlet in the living as if she was cold some times, she never does that when she feels good.

Is this your first winter with them? Some laugh at this but.....Humidity is extremely important for us, pets, plants. In the winter humidity levels can go down below 20%, summer its around 60%, they say comfort zone is between 35% and 60%. This drastic level change can cause sinus irritations, skin irritations, respiratory irritation leading to stress and infection. You can get a humidifier for 40 bucks or less, and they come with a humidistat......

I've also heard about Feline Herpes which also have these symptoms I believe.
