stop pool planters as litter box

We put in a screen in pool with a big patio so our 2 cats could play outside. unfortunately they are using the planter for a litter box , killing the plants and smelling up the pool area. my husband will only let them out when we are out. Please help...i wnat them to do able to go out all the time and enjoy it since they are indoor cats.

You could try a very simple thing, place wedges of lemon in
the planters, it might just work.
It has worked for me with keeping our lot out of our Christmas tree.

Place decorative rocks/pebbles on top of the soil. It will look pretty and will keep the cats out.
