So everytime a cat brushes by the computer, the static makes it shut off. Until we can find a decent humidifier, is there any way to stop this? I thought about hanging a towel over the computer but I think the towel might hold static too. This is very annoying and cannot be good for the computer!

Have you open up the computer and cleaned it thoroughly? Check all wires, make sure there's nothing loose. I'm not really finding much on if static could cause this problem, cases are designed to prevent that along with the motherboard on risers, not directly touching any metal. A failing power supply would restart it and so can a faulty power button with the slightest jarring to the computer.
