Hilda's thread about the sinkhole in Guatemala got me to thinking about this event that happened back in 1980. I had posted about this in the "tell us about your state/province" thread, but no one commented on it. Either they didn't read it or just didn't care.

It happened on Jefferson Island…the Lake Peigneur disaster…..too lengthy to explain…amazing that no one died…..read here.

I do not remember that happening, we were living in Mississippi at that time, but for the life of me I just can't remember that, but I don't hardly remember what I did yesterday.

That was before my time. I don't recall hearing about anything like that in history class growing up, but then I'm not from the South either. I'd have remembered that one! And probably not gotten in any lake ever again either!

You're welcome.
This happened just next door, so to speak.....and over 25 years later, I'm still astounded every time I read something about it.

thanks. I'm a nanny and the kids are trying to pic speech topics.....I'm going to suggest this to one of the boys. I think it'd be really interesting and could be told very theatrically.
