Something quite odd happened yesterday - Lily climbed into the litter box and slept there for about a half hour...LOL

Not sure why though...it was so strange

Anyone's cat ever done this before, and what does it mean?

Is the litter sand supposed to be cooler or what?

I don't know, but it would kinda make sense that it was cool in there.

Let us know if she does it again.

That is kinda weird though.

Many of the new arrivals at the animal shelter I work at will often sleep in their litter boxes. They seem to like the added "protection" of the walls of the box. Usually if I can provide them with a cardboard box with a comfy towel in the bottom or a cat bed with reasonably high sides, they will switch over to these alternatives. Did something happen yesterday to interrupt your girl's normal routine that might have made her a bit unsure or nervous? Of course, being a cat, it is also totally possible that she just decided she liked it in there

I can't think of anything that might have upset her routine - though it has been hotter than usual (don't know if that has anything to do with it)...perhaps something might have happened between her and my other cat Nermal that we're not aware of.

My little Merlynn did this when she was a young kitten and we stayed a week at a friend's house. It was the end of our first day there and she was about done exploring and taking everything in. I cleaned the litter box and not a moment later, Merlynn stepped in and laid right down in the box.

That completely freaked me out because I always heard that cat's do not like to have their litter boxes near their food because of the smell and they just don't want to hang around in their littler boxes.

I ran to my car to grab the book I was currently reading, "The Kitten Owner's Manual." I flipped to the exact question about a kitten in their litter box and I was relieved to hear that kittens, when in a new place, will lay down and even sleep in their "clean" litter boxes. It reminds them of a familiar place and makes them feel safe.

Is you kitty a kitten? Did you recently move or did she recently move in?

Hope this helps.

Thanks this has helped a lot, she's just over a year old - we moved into our place at the beginning of Nov last year, so perhaps it's that, though it has been quite some time since...lol...maybe she just likes it in there

My cat used to do this when I had to put her in her crate (think HUGE crate for a large size dog) when there was work being done in my apartment while I was out and couldn't keep her shut up in a bedroom or bathroom. I think she liked the security of the closed in space. It made her feel more secure.
