I cleaned my gerbil tank tonight. I can't figure out where I put the stupid CareFresh, so I put in some small animal corn cob litter. I am amazed at how much fun the gerbils are having in that stuff! It's so fun to watch them play!!

Now I'm torn between CareFresh & corn cob bedding. I love that they can dig & play more in the CareFresh, but a concern of mine is the urine in the CareFresh...I change it weekly, but it still always seems to smell strong & I don't know how that can affect them. The corn cob litter is cheaper than the CareFresh & they like it just as much. I gave them TP tubes to chew on & play in(as always) so they can tunnel, they have their wood house, shelves in the tank, of course food & water, gerbil safe wheel, & a little thing to shred for bedding.

Would you go for CareFresh or the Corn Cob Litter?

I forgot all about the corn cob litter, but now that I think about it I definately liked it better then CareFresh. I was thinking I should pick some up for my guineas but I am going to go with corn cob bedding instead I think. Seems like it does take care of the odor and urine longer then carefresh would.

Because they are in a tank, I am concerned about ventilation & the CareFresh holding urine...I'm sure you get the point. The tank has a mesh lid, & I made sure it was in a place that wasn't drafty & now the air flow is minimal.

CareFresh is like $15-20 for a big package(not exactly sure how big) & Corn Cob Litter is $12 for 50 lbs. Makes me wonder if the CareFresh is really worth it, or if it could possibly be harming my lil fuzzy bumpkins.

Corn cob can very dangerous if your animals decide to ingest it.
Not to mention it's hard (can't be pleasant for little feet) and it grows toxic molds rather easily.

I like the carefresh better myself. The corncob would get kicked out of the cage and it really hurt my feet if I stepped on it, plus they were eating it and could not make a bed out of it. I also don't see how it's absorbent, they are hard little balls. Mine do good in the carefresh and like to make big nests out of it. It really depends on the pet though.

I've had rats choke on corncob and my nephew's gerbil died from an impacted digestive tract from eating it.
Stuff is bad news.
I prefer aspen bedding myself, safe, contains no phenols and it's soft and absorbent.

Yeah I used aspen too, which I liked but my gerbil had allergies to it so I had to switch.

I'll have to look around to see if I can find some Aspen bedding, then!
