I'm considering getting my cat a buddy, but have never kept two cats before. Those of you who have gone from one cat to two, what are some differences in your lifestyle that you've noticed? What are some considerations?

What extra supplies must you get?

No difference in lifestyle, really - more laughter, maybe. And more scooping of the litterbox.

Extra supplies include: Twice as much cat food, litter, toys and love. Lots of love.

Two kitties are 'way more than twice the fun, but not nearly twice the work. And your present kitty will be so grateful for a friend to play with! (Maybe not right away, but eventually...
)

The only other supplies I can think of might be a second catbed, if your present kitty uses one... and possibly a second litterbox, because some cats don't like to share. (The standard is supposed to be one box per kitty, plus one extra -- but who has that kind of room?)

This is great! Let us know when you find your new kitty... and be sure to read the thread on kitty introductions here: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67321 That technique really makes a difference. Good luck!

In some ways I think Chloe preferred to be an only cat, so I would consider the personality of your resident cat.

Iris tends to dominate games, so we try to make special times so Chloe gets a chance. (Chloe loves to watch and stalk, whereas Iris pounces every time and never gives Chloe an opportunity.)

I do feel better that they have each other's company, even if they sometimes get irritated at each other. Particularly if we're gone for much of a day. They chase each other around and get exercise and interactive play.

As far as supplies, double the litter, food, literboxes, check-ups at the vet, etc. Otherwise, it's really not that much more work.

I have just recently went to two cats. At first the new cat had its own bowls and litter box but I had or made these and did not need to buy any extra supplys. In my case, not even food because the new cat loved the food my established cat was already happily eating. I do not find a lot of extra time or work involved at all since they eat from the same bowls now and use the same litter box (just more to scoop). The established cat requires a great deal of grooming, but the new cat is very short hair and requires very little. So, as far as my time goes, I notice very insignificant difference, other than I now spend quite a bit of time watching the two of them playing together. I had some issues at first but they are all behind us. I am happier with two cats than one. GO FOR IT.
