I purchased two of these mats. They work very well to keep cats off the sofa (one of mine kept peeing on the cushions). However, I should warn you that the craftsmanship of this product is very poor. I have had to repair the wiring twice now. The first time the wire severed as the manufactorer pinched the wire in the control bar (in both mats!). Second time, the wire broke off from the connection, requiring that we had to sodder it back into place. This was all a bit of an ordeal, as we had to take the mats apart.
I would have returned the product but as it took 5 days to ship I couldn't be bothered. I wrote HighTech Pet an email about their poor craftsmanship, and never heard back which infuriated me.
I saw an advertisement on TheCatSite today, so thought I should put out a buyer-beware warning. If you do make the purchase, handle the mat very very gently, and never fold it up as the cheap wiring can not handle ANY strain whatsoever.

My gosh. Even if I were inclined to use shock on my cats, I wouldn't trust such a device -- what if that sloppy, resoldered wiring starts a fire? What if a cat wets on it and it outright electrocutes him?

I don't think a fire or shock could occur as it is powered by a 9volt battery. The matt doesn't shock the cats, it just lets out a loud continuous beep until the cat or person (my mom accidently sat on it the other day!) gets off it.

Our metal soddering job seems to have held up. It's stronger now then when purchased.

I'm still glad we bought it as it does prevent accidents which are brutal to clean up. Though I'm still mad at the company for using such poor craftsmanship.
