I would call your foster director and ask her when would be best to give the treatment to Mom, especially if you haven't seen any evidence of fleas yet (plus, the fleas are much more likely to go for the kittens). I would also mention how thin the Mom is and ask if/when you could worm her.

Yay for those weights, those are GREAT! And good job for tracking, that'll really give you an advantage if something goes wrong with the kittens (though it sounds like they should be fine).

Oh, and watch that runt, they tend to be the trouble-makers, the litters I've helped out with, it's always the runt that will run and attack a bigger kitten, then immediately start crying for help the second it gets attacked! haha
You're right about the advantage and I did actually call the shelter mom this morning and even she wasn't sure so she called the vet that she uses. Vet said hold off on any dewormer, but the Advantage should be OK for the fleas. It's not wise to deworm a nursing mother unless you really have to, so I'm giving her a stool sample on Tuesday to bring to the vets with her when she goes with some other shelter kitties. They'll test it and let us know.

Thanks for all the help guys. I am a little more at ease now that I've gotten help from you guys and after doing some internet research. Now I just gotta watch the little buggers and see how they progress.
(I'll tell you what - for tiny little furballs they've got some howl on them!
Everytime I pick one up it starts with a pathetic meow and escalates to a howl. It's so cute!

Yes - I am soooooo addicted. In fact I've been sitting here thinking of how I can pose these little furballs. Since they're only 2 weeks old the'll stay wherever I put them.

Can anyone help me please? My Layla is pregnant! she is near the final stages of pregnancy but doesnt look HUGE. The babies are moving alot and i can see movement in at least 3 places.
I am so excited i want to try and get an idea of how many babies will come? its her 1st litter....and also does anyone know about genetics?? Layla is pure white...the father is black and white. Is it likely that the babies will be white? could they be any other colour except blk/ white? If anyone can help me i will really appreciate it as curiosity and waiting is KILLING ME!!! lol.

Sully if you scroll down to the bottom of the page you can start a new thread where
it says ' new thread' and ask all the questions you need for your baby girl.
That way you will get the answers you need rather than being confused by other
peoples answers.

So......I go to help out at the adoption clinic today and the shelter lady who asked me to foster mom and kittens asks me if I want 6 neonatel (sp?) kittens who's mom died
. They are only 2 days old.
(ok - I can't "thud" enough).
Ummm...hello! Let me try to at least raise the ones I have successfully before you really get me in deep.

Seriously I would have done it, but with feedings every 3 hours I can't cause of that stupid thing called work.

Lisa actually it wouldn't be to hard if they where like a week or 2 older. They all would get along and help each other. I love the kitten waving soooo cute.

I figured that much - that they would all get along and stuff, but the neonatel ones are only 3 days old now and way way too needy for the time I have for them. I could feed them around the clock no problem with the exception of my work time and since I work 45 minutes away, I just can't come home for feedings. As much as I'd love to. She said this litter is beautiful!
black one, tuxedo one, orange and white one, two blonde/buff, and I forget the last one, but all 6 are so different she said.

have you thought about trying to see if the mum cat you are fostering will adopt this other little litter ? maybe talk with the shelter to ask there advise and how to go about it ? the mum has milk and as long both litters are healthy it would be the best thing for them being so young.

Yes, but that would make a total of 10 babies and mom is very tiny (like 6-8 months old tiny) and very very bony. Could there be any possible health issues with her because of it? or I also worry about the possibility of her not having enough milk for 10 babies. That's a lot!

True I wonder if it is supply and demand like we are.

Yeah - that's my worry.
I spoke with someone who use to breed dogs years ago about this and that was what she had said to me. Mom will in most cases take on surrogates, but you have to be careful you're not taking away from the supply of her own.

Does anyone know anything extensively about this? Moms taking on surrogates? How much is too many?
In the meantime I'm going to try to call the shelter lady, see how those little ones are doing and talk to her about it. Maybe one or two will make things easier on her? Maybe she's got another mom nursing elsewhere and we can divide the bunch?

I am not sure but I know Skittles had 13 and she had to nurse 8 of them 5 did not make it and she was still going strong. So I think in my eye 8 would be enough if mom is on a great diet. I feed her KMR and Natural foods. She did so good every check the babies where over weight LOL. Let me know what ya find out ok.
