Sending good thoughts for you and ol' Smokie. I feel sure you're right, that it isn't any kind of tumor. It occurs to me that if the spider bit him inside his mouth, it might cause that kind of swelling from the inside... and since the mouth is a very fast-healing area, the actual site of the bite might no longer be apparent. Just a theory.

In an older apartment I once lived in, I woke up one morning with two spots of incredible pain on my abdomen -- pale with redness around them, just as PookiePoo described. I couldn't afford a doctor, so I just dealt with the pain and watched the spots change as they gradually healed over a period of several months. The pigmentation in those two spots has never returned, and I've always wondered what on earth caused them. Now I know!

My vet is so annoying with her "worst case scenario" attitude. They think they are doing you a favor by preparing you for the worst, but I think it just sucks. She is still insisting it is a tumor and feels it is untreatable, even though we haven't gotten the biopsy results yet. She is basically telling me I can just "try to make him comfortable til he dies. That is such crap. His nose is really stuffy and I keep cleaning it with a tissue (if only he could blow
) I asked her for something to dry it up and she is like, well, it is discharge coming from the tumor and there is nothing that I can give him to dry it up. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I know for a fact that an antihistamine/sinus med would help. Since he cannot smell now, he is not eating. It worries me tremendously because now he could just starve to death instead. I am going to ask another Vet.

I would take him to another vet too, I think that they try and prepare you for the worst too, but they could also give you a little encouragement.

I am sending hugs and prayers for you from Mississippi.

Please keep us updated on how Smokie is doing.

I wish you could have my vet see him. She is just the opposite, always upbeat and positive and listens to what I have to say for any clues as to what might be wrong. She was great with me right up till the end with Tuffy.

It don't seem to hard to figure out that if he is all swolen and there is a dead spider next to him that spider bites caused the problem? I have not read all the posts yet, but what if any meds is he on? I would think he should be on some kind of antibiotic at least.

EDIT,, I just read most of the posts, I see you have done allot to try and help him out with meds and tests, so sorry for the post without reading everything first.

Smokie has been on a month long course First 3 days of Metacam then a month of Prednisolone, had 3 more days of Metacam, is taking Clavamox and painkillers and is starting back on the Pred on Monday. I am just hoping it does not cause him any side effects. It can be harmful to the liver. He seems to be better today and did have a bite of his breakfast. I am just praying so hard that the doctor is totally wrong about it. He is improving so, that in itself tells me it is not a tumor. I am keeping the faith. I am just trying to treat him as though nothing is wrong. I know he senses when I worry and then he worries too. It is unfortunate that the biopsies take so long because we can't start additional treatment until we know exactly what to treat.
I just think it would be better to say "I think it may be a tumor, if it is then blah, blah, blah..." But, to insist that it is and he's a goner is just wrong of her.

It is awfully insensitive of your vet.

If I were you I would call her on it, tell her she could at least be a bit more open minded and not so fatalistic.

Some of the people on here used a saline solution mix dripped in their kitties noses to clear a bit of discharge so the a cat can smell it's food. If anyone who's done that could comment?

Is he eating wet food? Maybe warming it up a bit would help since that makes it more smelly.

I hope your baby can pull through this.

Blah, no offense but I dont like the sound of your vet at all.
Any way you can take him somewhere else for a second opinion?
I know it is costly.. but I have never heard of tumors just popping up like that overnight.

for Smokie.

i don't like your vet - even over the internet. i've begun searching for a new vet for my stoli as when i took him in when he got suddenly ill - they had NO idea what caused it......and they basically said he's a goner.....they did the equivalent of a human doctor saying your sudden headache is a tumor you're gonna die.

find another vet. if you stay strong and supportive of smokie he'll do GREAT.

I got Smokie some infant decongestant today, the liquid kind. He tolerated it very well and is sleeping just now. He is still wheezy, I am hoping it will help and not harm him. I also got a Sudacare Vapor plug and put it next to him. I was nervous of any reactions he might have to the medicine but, I have to try to help. It seems his only problem now is the sinus infection/stuffy nose thing.
He is really a lot better. Eating and wandering around the house. He comes down to sit with the rest of us at night. I have kept a vigilant check on him since I gave him the infant drops and he seems to be the same. I was just hoping for a miracle and his sinus would dry right up.

I will try a bit more tomorrow. This vet has a know it all attitude, but she performed surgery very well and he was quick to recover so, I do have some faith in her. I just hope the biopsy proves her tumor theory is wrong. I did get other opinions (2) but they both asked me what the last vet said and then they just seemed to agree.
Just a few more days for the biopsy result. Keeping my hopes up. It will feel really good to say "I told you so" when it comes back negative for cancer. :p

Smokie had to go into the Vet this AM. He was having alot of trouble breathing through his stuffed up nose. He also stopped eating and drinking on Saturday. He has lost almost 1 pound since he got sick and he only weighed 9-10lbs. to start, so I am worried.
He is dehydrated a little. They are nebulizing him and giving him IV fluids, predisolone and IV antibiotics. I am up to about $1300. now. We still don't have the biopsy results back yet. Maybe Wednesday. I asked them to see about giving him something to relax him a bit so he isn't so scared but, they didn't want him to have too much. I just hate that he is alone and scared in this nebulizer thing. I guess it is like a steam room with mentholatum. I hope it feels more like a day at the spa for him. Wish us luck.
