What is Scabbies exactly? I've heard of it but I don't know.

Don't be embarassed. I've had impitago twice. Once as a kid and once in university as an adult. It's one of those 'dirty' infections, though I certainly wasn't dirty.

It's wierd, now that I'm out of school I never pick up any of those wierd catchy illnesses that I used to.

Here's the other thing. Why exactly are they giving vacines for chickenpox? In the 70s when I had chickenpox all the neighbourhood moms sent there kids over to be with me so that they would get it and get it over with. It was actually desirable to have had it, so you wouldn't suffer with it as an adult. I also never remember anyone having to go to the hospitable with it or coming close to death (only death by itchiness).

Sounds a bit like the flu shot hype. I've never had a flu shot and haven't had the flu in eons. My parents always get the shot and have the flu at least once a year, if not twice. Same goes for other friends who have had it.

Maybe some one with kids here knows more about chicken pox today and why they vacinate for it?

Alycia, don't believe that scabies thing all the way! I took all four of the kids to the Er 2 years ago for itching all over.It was winter time,so they said it was scabies.I had to take them all back 2 days later cause the rash spread to their faces and they were welting up.
Guess what the other Dr. found out? It was poison ivy!!!!They got it from carrying in fire wood for the fireplace.
I'd ask around and see if anyone has been around poison ivy too.
I hope he feels better soon!!!

I'm going to admit something on TCS that is somewhat embarassing. I had scabes and was going on a road trip. Well.... I gave it to half my family.

It's okay, this too shall pass.

Yeah I'm with you on that one. Chicken pox, although uncomfortable and itchy at the time was a small price to pay for real immunity. I got chicken pox at age 8 and had mumps, and whooping cough at the time. Ouch! Well I've been exposed to chicken pox many many times since then and never got a 2nd round. Where all the people I know of in my age bracket who were vaccinated got it more than once in their life time. That's a lot of people. Two of them were actually hospitalized when they got shingles as an adult. I've also been exposed to shingles several times, and haven't got them yet.

Anyone who I know from my childhood who had chicken pox when they were kids has not had a 2nd round of chicken pox. Only 1 that I know of got shingles in his 30s.

I know that isn't scientific, but I really don't see why you should vaccinate against something that isn't very dangerous.

On a side note, I also had measles at age 6. Now that was bad! My little playmate died from it.

They gave us a pyrethrin based cream to apply from head to toe. No one else in the house has it (thank god) and they said they think we caught it early enough to where we shouldn't either.
It's so embarrassing!

I just told people he has a rash... I thought only "dirty people" or people who had poor hygiene caught them.

I have washed EVERYTHING in thier room today.. and Lysoled it also.
Well please don't feel bad....its a contact thing.

-Scabies is a curable skin disease caused by the parasite, Sarcoptes scabiei.
-Scabies is transmitted through close physical contact with a person who is infected or prolonged contact with infested linens, furniture, or clothing.
-Symptoms (most common itching) usually occur within 4 to 6 weeks after infection. Symptoms will begin within 1 to 4 days in a person who has been infected with scabies before.
-A person is considered infectious from the time of infestation until treatment is successfully completed.
-The only way for a person to know if he/she is infected with scabies is through a test.
-Secondary infection may occur due to continued, aggressive scratching.
-Crusted scabies, also known as Norwegian scabies, is a severe infestation of scabies. It normally occurs in people with compromised immune systems, such as the elderly and HIV-infected individuals.
-The only way to prevent infestation with scabies is avoid direct contact with infested people, bed linens, clothing, and furniture.
-Latex condoms, while not considered to be effective against scabies transmission, can prevent the transmission of other STDs

Hope this helps. My husband's co-worker's daughter caught it from trying on shoes....how that!!! She spread it to the whole family before they figured out what it was.

hang in there....

Uggh. Don't feel bad. Youngest dd had ringworm in 1st grade. She went for about a week with this "thing" on her face, I had no idea what the heck it was until she came home with this note from the nurse. Took her to the doctors, and yes, it was ringworm. I explained to her that it had nothing to do with rings or worms. Turns out one of her friends in the class had it. That was the year she had pinkeye 4 TIMES!

One girl in my other dtr's 5th grade class got lice. It was horrible. Dd didn't catch it but the poor kid had to go to another class, some nasty kids (not my dtr I made sure we talked about it) bugged her big time about it and made her life miserable

The thing is (and I learned this in a couple of different classes I've had to take at school- I'm studying to be an RN) that there can be serious complications (in some kids) from chickenpox. Not to mention the fact the child is out of school until all of the scabs have healed over. Dd was out for a week with them, and it was a royal pain. She wasn't sick, so she was bored out of her mind. She couldn't have anybody over to play. Somebody had to stay home with her since she was only in 3rd grade. She had a TON of makeup work to do.

What bugs me the most is that when the vaccine came out, the doctors had no idea that immunity could wear off if the child was vaccinated really young (dd was only a baby when she got her shot, my oldest was 4) and what I found out last year is that if the child gets the shot as an older child, there's less of a chance of them getting it.

I remember having chicken pox when I was a kid. Unfortunately I got them while on vacation in florida. It sucked.
