Another question for raw feeders.

Should I be concerned about parasites in raw meat if I feed my cats raw meat that is sold for human consumption in a grocery store and I'm only feeding muscle meat and organ meat? Not the intestines and not the stomach.

I tried researching this on line but there is so much conflicting information that it's hard to separate the true facts from the distorted facts(what they don't tell you). Before I begin I need to be absolutely sure it's safe. I'm not concerned about bacteria. I understand cats are not susceptible to salmonella and e-coli. It is parasites I'm worried about.

Also is my freezer cold enough to kill parasites if I freeze meat as a precaution?

There is a risk ... I just learned that lamb often contains Toxoplasmosis ... I need to discuss with my vet and get my girls tested.... According to the paperwork my vet gives on raw the risk for e coli and salmonalla is rare and low if you take precautions..

I'm not worried about e-coli and salmonella. What about parasites? I read that the typical freezer in a home is not cold enough to kill parasites.

Freezing halts the growth of bacteria, but the minute it's thawed, it begins to grow again. It doesn't kill it. So the longer meat is unthawed, the more bacteria is in it. That website: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets...ng/index.asp#3

It does say that freezing to zero degrees kills Trichina and other parasites, but home freezing shouldn't be depended on to kill them.

Our research has said that cats don't get any of the bacteria that occurs naturally in raw meat. What they're subsepitble to is cross-contamination from human handling of it. Humans introduce bacteria to it: I think e-coli and staph infection were two of them. I need to find a better resource for this information.
