Litter vs litter

Jerry came up with a good comment last weekend.........

Why does litter mean two different things? Kittens, as well as other animals, are born into litters, but yet I buy litter every week for TTP&B to do their business in.......he wants to know, "What's up with that?"

Umm...because they both involve the term ?

I.e.

"Oh Susie, the cat is pregnant again!"

"Oh ! The cat just delivered 9 kittens. that's 9 more to feed"

and...

"Can you clean the cat box? It's full of "

I've wondered the same thing. Trash thrown on the street is called litter too. When cats and dogs have babies we should call them furry bundles of joy instead.

We didn't even think of that use of the word!

It also can be used as a verb as in - do not "litter".

I think litter is used to describe a cart kinda contraption too..... ok, per Webster's it is also a stretcher or couch used to transport people- what a muli-talented word!!
