Need to spay my last fuzzy face (out of 12...big ouch on the vet. bill)...and Dana has finally gone into heat. I have been told not to spay a female while she is in heat and if that is true, how long does a heat last? My vet. wants to charge me more to spay her if she is in heat. Does that make sense?

some vets will spay a cat who is *calling* others wont , just like some will charge more and some will stay the same. i think the reason is because there is more blood in the utures or something. and a *call* can last from anything from a few days to a week or 2 , but being her first it might only last a cupple of days. some say its best to spay before they start *calling* to reduce later problems and infections. as long as she cannot get to any intact males inside or outside , you should be fine to waite untill its finshed . but they can go in and out of heat every few weeks , some even every few days. i had my kitten spayed while she was in heat , she was 5 months and vets round here will not spay untill 6 months old . but they did her early . and everything went fine , that was 4 weeks ago now . good luck
