I had some people call me in response to an ad for some kittens I had available last week. They are gone but I was just speaking to someone else about picking up some 8 week old kittens. I questioned their young age but didn't get a straight answer as to why they are away from their mother so young.

So anyways I go today with the idea of picking up two young kittens, about 8 weeks old. I get there to find myself standing at the door of the most disgusting nasty apartment I have ever seen in a nasty part of town. The front door was rotting off the hinges. There was crap everywhere and it smelled awful. There were three cats right at the door, one suprisingly neutered adult male, the rest who knows. The lady answers the door, with bright blue make up smeared all over her eyes, she was clearly drunk or stoned or something her hands were shaking so badly and her eyes were bloodshot.

I told her I was here for a kitten and she runs into the other room and pulls out 4 tiny little kittens about 5 days old. I of course grabbed them from her before she dropped them, which she joked about almost doing. And then she was thanking me and ready to shoo me out the door. I asked about the mother of course and she said that the neighbor wants her.

So I told her I am not leaving here without these babies, and they cannot leave without their mother. So she said "ok fine I doubt they will actually come and get her anyways..."

So now I have a wonderful mother kitty. All black and long haired. She is thin but the babies are happy and healthy and warm and she is great with them. I am so happy to have kittens that AREN'T orphaned! Last few young litters I had were bottle babies and WHAT A PAIN that is. But ya, they are very well behaved. When I have Cuddles (see my thread in SOS) out in the hallway, I let the mother stretch her legs in the room, otherwise she is in a cage. Tomorrow she will be moved to the bathroom when the big Monster Kitty (see my other thread in SOS!) goes to his new home hopefully tomorrow. And I think I might take Cuddles to my neighbors...

Anyways had to share that story. Some people just make me so mad. Poor kitties. Oh and I am having my boyfriend apply for free spay for low income people and I am going to see if I can get the momma done. My friend at school just applied and she got it for both her cats. I would snap a picture but the little family is sleeping right now!

Aww, well done! I can't stand hearing stories about kittens being taken away from their mothers. It's just so awful. I'm glad the whole family is now safe and with someone who will love and take care of them.

God bless you!

I lucked out, there is a local rescuer who is currently taking in nursing cats and kittens right now. So I just emailed and hopefully I can get the little family in there. I don't really have the means to care for so many extra mouths at the moment. Obviously this was a situation where I didn't even think twice about getting them out of that place. I worry about what to do with them after as I am driving home thinking oh god where am I going to put them, they need food and a litterbox, crap I have no space...etc... Act now and think later!

You did the right thing, even if you didn't have space! I cannot believe that the lady thought she was going to give you 5 day old kittens!!!

What's going to happen to the other cats in the home?

Well I was planning a trip to Tiger Ranch already. I might bump it up to next Saturday. And see if I can take any of the rest of them. They can keep the neutered male if they like, he was in great shape and at least he cannot reproduce. He is already an outdoor cat so he knows how to handle himself and they were feeding them a decent enough looking cat food, sure it was out of a cardboard box lid... but still. I don't know. I really should go next week and get the rest out of there.

I wonder how the drunk lady got the cats in the first place. How did she think to call someone about them? lucky she didn't just put them all out in the street.

Jen, well done!

You're doing marvelous work by rescuing these cats and kittens...it's an exhausting and often sad job, but also very rewarding.

Yep, and I do believe that there is a special place in Heaven for Jen too. I think she just might be an official caretaker over at Rainbow Bridge.

More hugs for you Jen.

I am just a sucker for kitties is all! I am even in vet assistant school so I can learn all I can about them. I don't even have any interest in being a vet assistant! I just want my own shelter someday.

First off, I am working on pictures.

BUT it turns out the mother cat has intentional burns on her ears, anemia and a heart murmur! I thought it seemed like candy or some sort of gunk on the ears because they were sticky, but the vet said her ears were burned. But there are 3 boys and one girl. They are 10 days old doing very well. The mother is very underweight though.

Oh and if anyone cares, I am taking the rest of their cats on Saturday. The guy just emailed me back and said that he has about 8 more that he needs to get rid of or else he will have to leave them on the side of the road. So I am taking them all.

Those poor kitties! I'm so glad you are able to help the rest of them too. It breaks my heart to see or hear about a kitty living like that

The thing is, the guy said he found them in a box on the highway. I have no reason not to believe that but considering the condition of the apartment and the people in it, who knows. The cat could have been one of the ones that was found in the box. I just don't know. The point is getting the cats out of there and that is what I am going to do.
