I had a bad day yesterday and the night hasn't been much better but before I go any further I need to give some background. I have asthma, post-nasal drip and acid reflux. The asthma doesn't bother me a whole lot but sometimes the combination of the drip and acid reflux can get me pretty good. I was wondering if anyone here has had an experience similar to what I'm about to describe.

Yesterday morning I was suddenly awoken by a choking sensation- along the lines of water or some other liquid going the wrong "pipe". I also had this burning sensation in the back of the throught. This isn't something that I've felt in a while but I attributed it to my acid reflux and the burning sensation to be caused by stomach acid. I ended up rushing to the bathroom and standing over the seek trying to clear my throat. My mouth was also filling with saliva and there was a slight orange tinge to some of what I was spitting up. Sorry, if that's a bit graphic but it needs to be included in the details.

I've also been fighting a bit of cold congestion in my nasal cavities and my drip was also acting up a bit. I was coughing pretty hard and it caused my head to start pounding really pad. I just wanted to collapsed. I stayed home from work last night because I still have a slight headache and also have some coughing and a feeling in my throat caused by the drip that causes me to keep clearing it. I'm going to see my doctor this morning. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Thanks.

You could have an infection or the acid reflux could have came up in your throat because you were laying down. It might not be bad idea to ask your doctor about many of the prescription one a day pills on the market now for acid reflux.

Also if you're not taking them already, medications such as Singular and Advair can really help with asthma. They help prevent the swelling that causes asthma attacks. Since my husband was put on these medication a few years ago his asthma is much more manageable. Talk to your doctor about new treatments
Good luck at the doctor!

Thanks, Bruce. Man, I haven't had anything that bad but along time ago I had a bad case of bronchitis that knocked me on a butt for over a week. I constantly hacking up stuff from lungs. The doc said if I waited any longer to come into the hospital there was a good chance I could have ended up with pnuemonia. It's a sad day when you realize you aren't indestructible any more...

Thanks, strange_wings. I've been taking Prilosec OTC for the past few years and for the most part it has worked great but yesterday has me thinking that I may need to go with something stronger.

For my allergies I've been taking Allegra D and I've been out of Singulair for a while so I need I'll get that one renewed while I'm at the doc. I had surgery last spring to fix a deviated septum and this the worst I have felt since then. You could be on to something about having a possible infection.

That choking and burning sensation is the scariest thing I have ever had to deal with.

I used to be afraid to go to bed, because I could make book that I would be awakened by burning in my throat so bad I couldn't breathe. The first time it happened I thought I was going to die.

I finally figured out that I can not have anything with tomatos or tomato sauce at night before I go to bed ( that meant pizza) not even 4 hours before I went to bed.

I finally stopped the cycle by not eating anything after 6 pm for a week, and then gradually worked my wat up to 7. I have not had an attack for a year now.

Please get better.

That's the way that I felt yesterday and last night. I was almost so scared to go back to sleep for fear that I might not wake up or wake up too late if it happened again. I'm glad that you have yours under control.

I couldn't get in to see my doc today, he's booked but I did manage to get an appointment for friday. I think I may be getting a upper respiratory infection. I feel more congested than yesterday.

Back to bed for me, have a good day everyone!

That's happened to me a few times. I have acid reflux too. I make sure to take Prilosec OTC at least every other day and I'm fine.

I have a sinus infection.

The doc game an antibiotic called Avelox (Moxifloxacin) which is used for treating sinusitis, bronchitis and pneumonia. I've never had this one before so we'll see how it goes.

He also gave some samples of a 30mg Prevacid tablet to try. It's supposed to be stronger than the regular Prevacid. He also said that Prilosec is on par with the regular Prevacid.

That's about it.

i found i was more prone to these when i was on Advair...

also, try sleeping with your head raised - you know, extra pillows, or sleeping in a recliner instead of a bed. that helps with drainage of the sinuses & would help prevent that 'choking' sensation as well.
