Self-checkouts - Page 2

They used to have them at foodtown but phased them out years ago during thier remodel(used it all the time there as it was the fastest way-think they had 8 self checkout lanes) only place that has them locally now is BJ's If I am buying normal(ha) stuff I will but If I have cat litter no-as you have to move each item along the belt and cant scan twice and leave anything in cart(anyone know a way around this?) Usualy buy 6 buckets at a time if its a cat litter run.

I love the self checkouts. I always use them unless I have a big cart full of stuff.

I do think, though, that there's a real need for a sign at the entrance of the self-checkout line that reads:

"If you don't know how to change the time on your VCR, do not attempt to use this line."

It would just make things easier on everyone.

Wow! I must be living in the dark ages here!! I've never heard of a self checkout

I LOVE self check out i am a cashier part time so i just find it easier. and at alot of the places now adays i get irrated with the cashiers. they are so rude. I always make a point to be happy cheery, talk to the customer..ect..GRRR

I like them for an item or two, but I won't use them if the people in front of me are checking out a weeks worth of groceries. That always takes longer than the regular line.

The only place that has them around here is Fortinos

I was tempted to pick the "I'm a freak" category, but figured it was just for Natalie! Personally, I've never used them and don't plan on it! I will occasionally use the ones at gas stations, but I draw the line at grocery stores, Home Depot, etc. Besides, how on earth do you pay cash at them! I dont' think you can!

I too love the self-check-outs and use them whenever I can! We have them at Wal*Marts, HEBs (Texas grocery store chain), Home Depots, Lowe's...lots of places and I just love 'em!

I see that we have a few 'nice' cashiers here in our lil' family, and I mean no offense to y'all, but I'm in agreement with many of the folks here too...so many cashiers nowadays are just rude....not even that though...cuz to be rude would mean that they would actually do something Many times, I don't get a 'hello'...'did you find everything you were looking for'...heck, lots of times they don't even tell you what your total is...they just wait for you to zip your debit/credit card through the slot...give you your receipt...AND THAT'S IT!!! Nothing else....what the heck kind of service is that? Oh and another thing that I simply cannot stand is when you're paying with cash and they hand you a wad of change...not counting it into your hand...just a lump...like I'm supposed to trust that they gave me the correct change? I don't think so! I know and I've been told that its because they've been told not to hold up the lines by counting it out...well I'm so sorry but if you don't count it out then I'm going to and its going to hold up the line either way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whew...

yeah I am a control freak too!
Phew! It's nice to know that I'm not alone in that - I really, really don't like squished bread loaves either.

I don't use them because i'd hate to see people out of a job even if theres just a couple of these machines in the supermarkets, because it makes you wonder if their just using these as testers to see how easy people find them, then the next thing is the cashiers out the door

Give me the personal service any day!

I voted "what are ...", though I know what they are, but the other answers just didn't match...
The problem is, where I live (Germany) and shop (G. plus France and Luxembourg), we don't really have this thing, except for major cities.
I've seen that stuff before, yes, but my regular shopping facilities (I'm complicated today, sorry) don't offer that.
We do have express checkouts, though and I recently saw a special checkout in Luxembourg where handicapped people and expectant mothers can check out faster...but apart from that, nope! The only thing to do with that are many of those scanners in the shop where you can check the price, but you can't pay there

They have a place to put cash in. It's just like a soda machine

this is totally off topic, but I once had a bagger berate me because I bought eggs and didn't buy bread. Apparently the only way to bag eggs is with a loaf of bread

A brand new Wal Mart Super Center near here opened two weeks ago, no self checkouts. I don't think they are catching on well here...
