I love them! Although it takes me a bit longer than it does a cashier to scan my items, especially since I have to scan and bag, the line is so much shorter and faster that it more than makes up for it.

LMAO!!!

Self checkouts frustrate me so bad sometimes, but I use them anyway if I just have a few items and the rest of the lines are long.

Since we moved 7 months ago we found that our local k-mart has those self checkout things. I think they'd be really good if the bloody cashiers didn't hang around and help you!!! it's called a SELF checkout!!!

I love the self check outs at our local grocery store. I'm pretty anal about packing things the way I want, and it's way quicker, usually.
Except Home Depot where a lot of items don't scan properly.
The ones at our local WalMart were so bad that they took them out!

I find that even with the occasional error and the need to have an employee assist with it, that the self-checkouts are MUCH faster and easier for me to use.

Plus, I get the added benefit of NOT having to deal with a blank-faced cashier who is having a long and very personal conversation with the bagger,
not ONCE looking at me as she/he rings in my items and asks for my payment.

And whatever happened to the smile, the greeting, and the "Thank you, have a nice day!" part of customer service - they don't seem to exist in the stores in MY area anymore!

I would MUCH rather have a machine not look at me. The machines give better customer service, in my jaded opinion. And they thank me for shopping there.

OK - I admit it...I'm a control freak.

I always use them if available because I am fussy about the way my bags are packed, like Ginger's Mom, I don't like dealing with cashiers who are too busy chatting to others (I mean really who puts potatos on top of a loaf of bread - I even put them all on the belt in order for you!)
yeah I am a control freak too!

They used to have them at foodtown but phased them out years ago during thier remodel(used it all the time there as it was the fastest way-think they had 8 self checkout lanes) only place that has them locally now is BJ's If I am buying normal(ha) stuff I will but If I have cat litter no-as you have to move each item along the belt and cant scan twice and leave anything in cart(anyone know a way around this?) Usualy buy 6 buckets at a time if its a cat litter run.

I love the self checkouts. I always use them unless I have a big cart full of stuff.

I do think, though, that there's a real need for a sign at the entrance of the self-checkout line that reads:
"If you don't know how to change the time on your VCR, do not attempt to use this line."
It would just make things easier on everyone.

I like them for an item or two, but I won't use them if the people in front of me are checking out a weeks worth of groceries. That always takes longer than the regular line.

I was tempted to pick the "I'm a freak" category, but figured it was just for Natalie! Personally, I've never used them and don't plan on it! I will occasionally use the ones at gas stations, but I draw the line at grocery stores, Home Depot, etc. Besides, how on earth do you pay cash at them! I dont' think you can!

I too love the self-check-outs and use them whenever I can! We have them at Wal*Marts, HEBs (Texas grocery store chain), Home Depots, Lowe's...lots of places and I just love 'em!

I see that we have a few 'nice' cashiers here in our lil' family, and I mean no offense to y'all, but I'm in agreement with many of the folks here too...so many cashiers nowadays are just rude....not even that though...cuz to be rude would mean that they would actually do something
Many times, I don't get a 'hello'...'did you find everything you were looking for'...heck, lots of times they don't even tell you what your total is...they just wait for you to zip your debit/credit card through the slot...give you your receipt...AND THAT'S IT!!! Nothing else....what the heck kind of service is that? Oh and another thing that I simply cannot stand is when you're paying with cash and they hand you a wad of change...not counting it into your hand...just a lump...like I'm supposed to trust that they gave me the correct change? I don't think so! I know and I've been told that its because they've been told not to hold up the lines by counting it out...well I'm so sorry but if you don't count it out then I'm going to and its going to hold up the line either way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whew...

Phew! It's nice to know that I'm not alone in that - I really, really don't like squished bread loaves either.
