The kittens (stray mom that we took in pregnant at Christmas time) are now 3 weeks old and beginning to wander around their area. Currently there is a litter box for momcat in there with regular (non-clumping) litter. Can I use this kind of litter for the kittens as well, or should I switch mom to something else as well as setting up a separate, smaller tray for the babies? I know clumping litter is bad, and have been told that kittens may try to eat regular litter as well. Is there something I should use that is safer/better?

Non-clumping litter is fine for kittens. The only kind I'd avoid for the really little ones is clumping clay litter. If you want a clumping litter, a plant based one like Swheat or World's Best would be fine.

I got a 5 weeks old kitten today and I'm using a pine-clumping one, however, the foster I got her from used only newspaper - so I but both in the litterbox. Not too sure if it clumps though, as she has only used the side where the newspaper is so far.

But the saw-dust is all over the place which I find annoying.

5 weeks is very young to be placed into a home. Our recommendation is for kittens to remain with their siblings and (if possible) mom until they are 10-12 weeks of age. There is still a lot of learning that a 5 week old must go through.

Good Luck

Why do you say clumping litter is bad? I have never heard that before. My cats do fine with clumping litter.

Clumping litter is not considered "safe" until the kittens reach the age of approximately 3 months of age. Before that time, it can cause potential issues if they ingest it.

We recommend using clay or a bio degradable version of litter until they reach 3 months.

I know and I wish it was different, but she is a street rescue and her family unfortunately was not rescued together with her. I just got her from her foster today and she informed me that the siblings were apparently taken away (disposed of) by now.
Life for strays sucks in Singapore...

That's terrible...it's good you are taking in this little one...just be patient with her since she doesn't have any of her family to learn from. Hopefully as more people get involved in helping strays in Singapore, whole families can be saved.

there are many helpers already
the foster of mine is actually very much involved in helping strays - I have no clue why she let the other ones up to themselves (especially since she took the mom away for sterilization)

- but enough for that topic - it doesn't suit the original topic - SORRY!
