Hello all,

My two 9 year old males have been throwing up every morning after they eat. They were on Science Diet senior indoor formula, but a trip to a new vet had us take them off. She had us switch to Nutro senior indoor formula and it has not helped. They are both in perfect health and just started this 2 weeks ago. The weirdest thing is they only do it in the mornings after they eat. When they eat in the evenings they are fine. They have been on the same eating schedule for about 6 months now after the vet said they could lose a couple pounds. They get to eat for 10 minutes (they don't eat the whole time) then the food is taken if they are done or not. They eat at 7am and 7pm. The only thing that makes sense to me is they are eating to fast and can't handle the food, so they throw up. It is also weird that they both started doing it at the same time and at the same hour. Could two vets miss something? Any thoughts, I'm getting tired of cleaning puke every morning.

Thank you!

Mine were throwing up after eating because they were eating too fast. The best thing you can do, in my opinion, is to raise their food bowls! This will force them to eat slower and digest their food better. I bought raised bowls, but you could also raise them by putting them on a book or something similar. About 1 inch off the ground should work. Good luck!

Is the food that they trow-up whole or not? If it is dry food you should be able to notice it. In that case it is that they're gulping down too fast. So raising the bowls, spreading food on a larger plate with a ball or something on the center will make them slow down while eating.
Or it could be a birth defect_esophagus too large or too small_ an x-ray could tell that.
You can tell with dry food, with canned food it is impossible to know. Also if the food has been chewed have them checked up by a vet for parasites or other problem..

I have two kitties, one of whom vomits after eating also in the AM. The vet said nothing was wrong. I tried not putting too much wet food down, and it helped for a while, aand then I noticed she was also vomitting dry food. She doesn't vomit every day thank goodness. This cat is an obsessive overeater but exercises it off and is not fat. The other cat who seems to eat more moderately is fatter due to not exercising as much. I agree it is a pain to clean up all the time. One of the problems is not seeing her vomit and then finding it all dy and the stain on the carpet is hard to get up. These kitties are just like kids and need as much care.

My cat used to throw up all the time after eating too. I raised the food bowls (as pp suggested) and it's worked so far!

When I was researching vomiting here, looking for past posts, there's a few that mention vomiting in the morning specifically. It's weird. You might look at them.

are you givign them any snacks or treats between thier normal 7 am and their pm feed? thinking maybe they are not as "starving" and then proceed to eat thier dinner a bit slower then breakfast. I had two issues when I tried to feed all mine on a 2 xs a day(puking and also cause I have quite a few, fighting, so now I just leave dry down all the time. Do your cats sleep through the night? If not maybe leave a bit of their regualr food in a dish and see if that eases it any...Have heard the ball in the food works great for fast eaters. I used to raise the bowl for my arthritic cats and it was much appreciated for that reason alone

also but not every day. She mostly vomits up canned food, I think only once do I remember her throwing up dry food. Misty eats kind of normal, not too fast, she eats some till she is satisfied and then goes back maybe 15 to 20 minutes later and eats more. She keeps this up till it's gone or when I take the bowl away. She has been checked out by the vet about this and everything was good so I really don't have an answer either about this. I do worry cuz she is a senior cat. I hope you find out what it is that's causing your kits to puke every morning.

Raise the dishes... stick a large marble or rock in the dish so the have to eat around...
if that doesnt help try doing a wet food diet ...

Before SD what did they eat???

Ohh and try the reg nutro natural choice one ingrediant may be the culprit

No, they don't really get any snacks or treats. When I adopted my two males 8 months ago or so, they were over weight due to having a full bowl of food all day long. The vet told us to do the 2x schedule since it would help with their weight. After they lost 3 - 5 pounds they leveled off so the vet told us to keep them on the that schedule. They are up and down all night, sometimes they are playing and other times they are waking us up for pets or food.

Today was the first day in a while that no one puked. I put their bowls about 1.5 inches up higher, but they were scooping it out of the bowl and eating it off the ground. Either way, it helped them slow down. Hopefully this will be the fix to the problem. Thanks for the info all!

They went two days without puking after I raised the bowl and gave them a snack in between feedings. But this morning, my one cat puked twice, which has never happened. They have been to two different vets and are health and happy. Not sure what to do from here.

I HAD the problem of my 6 year old vomiting  especially after morning meals for the past 2 years . This idea works well for me so far  ....Sprinkle a small handful of dry cat food around on the floor instead of putting it in the bowl .This prevents them from eating to fast . When they eat too fast they take too much air into the gut and that upsets their stomach  .After an hour or so give kitty the usual ration . It has worked for me so far 100% of the time !

Good Luck

My 12 yr old cat Pumpkin is throwing up every morn for the past 6 months. She seems perfectly healthy to the vet when we had blood work done etc. Soooo this is getting to be a worrisome thing happening to her. I think I will try the raising of her food and she is a grazer all day long. But she seems to be drinking a lot of water now for some reason. So I will keep an eye on her intake. A trip to the vet next week is in order if new food and a higher bowl isn't going to make a diff. She also eats a lot of treats as well during the day. So cutting back on that as well.
