We took him to the Vet this evening for the final time. He was 13 years old and had a brain tumor. We had an MRI done on him just over two weeks ago to see if the tumor was operable. The specialist didn't recommend surgery as the tumor was not only on his brain, but the skull and muscles of the head were involved too. We brought him home and he improved a little because of the prednizone, to reduce the swelling on his brain. But he started walking into walls again and his back legs were collapsing. He would eat if I spoon-fed him. He wasn't using the litter box, so we confined him to one bedroom at night and when we weren't home. (that carpet was pretty much covered with "puppy pads"). My husband was very supportive & let me decide "when". My 90 year-old mother lives with us and I needed to be mindful of the stress to her as well.
Since I get up early to work a half-time job (& I can't seem to get to bed early enough) I very often take a short afternoon nap. After lunch with my Mom, I would ask "Is Garfy ready for a nap?" and he would sometimes race me up the stairs, sometimes he'd let me go ahead and he'd come upstairs later - when he was ready! It's amazing how attached we become to these furry critters. I really never thought that he'd leave us this soon. It was just a month ago that I took him to the Vet, since he was not his usual self. At first, we just thought it was from a slightly elevated thyroid, but he started having balance problems and his pupils were uneven. I'm not sure if we'll ever get another pet - I'm sure that now is not the time to decide that.
Thanks for "listening".
