It has now been 2 weeks since we made the decision to adopt little Turbo. He has got to be the funniest, furriest little guy that we have ever owned, and man is he a lover. He loves to curl up at night under my hair and suckle on either my neck or my earlobes. I really don't mind it too much, but I certainly do not appreciate it at 4am, which is his favorite time of day to do this. I also don't really want to encourage this behavior since it is cute when he is only 2 pounds not so cute when he becomes 12 pounds! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to break him of this habit-like I said I don't mind the snuggles, but not the suckling-not gonna get any milk from this mom! Turbo is only 9 weeks old, but I have never had a cat do this before, how do I get him to cuddle but keep his mouth closed. It is kinda hard to explain that the "hickie" came from my kitten and not my husband!
Is this something that he will eventually grow out of or continue his whole life. Could it be that since he was a foster kitten he has bonded more with people than acting like a cat??? Does anyone else's cats do this and what do you do to deal with it??

Hi Kittycorner...we typically hear about this behavior in bottle babies or kittens that were taken away from their mom too soon. For now, I would give him a "mom replacement"...either a stuffed animal or a rice heater or a dog toy that he can suckle on. Here is a suggestion:

My Ellie did this when I got her. She would suckle on any bare flesh, not just mine but visitors, till it got embarrassing! She gradually grew out of it around 18 months/2 years old. She still licks me frantically, but I can cope with that.

I found out that Everest was doing this before I adopted him. He was found in a barn along with his sister and the mother was nowhere to found. They were four months old when I adopted them and Everest would lay on my chest and suckle, soaking my shirt in the process. Not long after I gave him a replacement, he's been using a pillow that I have propped against the wall where the bed is. He suckles on that when he feels the urge. He's nine months old and does this every day.

sometimes my patch will do this , i got him when he was only 4 weeks old so i put it down to that , his 9 months old now , and will still sometimes do this.
yet when my lilly had kittens i rehomed one to my sister when they was about 11 weeks old , and he will suckle but mine will not , i think it was because he was homed on his own though.
