i finally finished the whole 'sword of truth' series by terry goodkind a couple days ago, great fantasy.
and then i read 'an unlikely cat lady - feral adventures in the backyard jungle' by nina malkin. it's about a woman in brooklyn that encounters ferals in her backyard. it's got quite a bit of 'language' in it. my sister got it for me for christmas.

what have you just read? are reading or will read next?
DW has a masters in British Lit so she is always prodding me to read same.
She has finally succeeded in getting me to read Pride and Prejudice. There are five more Jane Austen books on the shelf. If I admit I like this book I will have to read the other five.

I really like Jane Austen.

I read Tony Hillerman's "The Shape Shifter" today. I've always enjoyed his books. http://www.amazon.com/Shape-Shifter-...2166301&sr=8-1

I'm currently reading Team Of Rivals: The Political Genius Of Abraham Lincoln.

I'm close to 200 pages into it and it's a great read. The book not only tells the story of Abraham Lincoln and his journey into law and politics but also delves into the lives of his rivals who end up becoming part of his cabinet as president.

I'm currently reading The Devil Wears Prada. It's hilarious! I feel awful for the main character, hehe.

Ha! you need to meet DW.
I am currently reading One Hundred Years of Solitude. The back cover states:
"One of the most influential literary works of our time." It also states: "One Hundred Years of Solitude is the first piece of literature since the Book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race". Those are pretty bold statements, ones that I will comment on when I am finished.

I enjoyed that book also. Right now I am reading The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene. It is about String Theory. I should say I am slooowly reading it. It is gracefully written and beautifully explained, but it is a lot for my brain to take in!
I am also reading some Ruth Rendell (mysteries), much faster but no less enjoyable read!

I just picked up: A Primate's Memoir
Love, Death and Baboons in East Africa

It's written by Robert M. Sapolsky and would recommend it to anyone who is an animal lover. I'm not done yet, but so far it is quite a brisk pace and extremely interesting.

Mostly, school books, lol Seriously, I love to read and the latest is a mystery - Obsession by Jonathon Kellerman. It's OK but Kellerman's books are all starting to sound a bit alike. I like his wife's better actually - I also like Cornwell and the woman from Ga - about the pediatrician/pathologist in a small town named Sara but I can't think of the author's name, ugh! They are a little on the dark side (like Cornwell's are not, lol) -I'll look up the name. Of course, I wish there was another Harry Potter book, lol

In between scholl stuff I've been reading The World Without Us by Alan Weisman. It is about what would happen if all the humans disappeared from tis earth...the processes in which nature would reclaim all our infrastructure. It is interesting, but I feel the author drifts a bit and it is hard to stay focused.

Re a good history of the US, my mom (who is a radical liberal of ever there was one- no wonder we live in Vt, lol), had me read Howard Zinn's People's History of the US and it does give a good perspective. I also really liked- believe it or not- a history set that was used for middle schools - there was so much stuff I never learned when I was there, lol - and also even American History for Dummies is good. I really enjoyed Shelby Foote's books on the Civil War as well because being a Yankee and all, I really did not know too much about the Civil War until I saw the Ken Burns series and read the books. I knew the basics and had been to Gettysburg but Foote's books are wonderful.

I do have to say though that one really should read a series of books to get to know the whole history - books about womens' history for example like The Sisterhood by Marcia Cohen (how the 2nd feminist movement happened), a bio of Susan B. Anthony, some books about African American history - Alice Walker has some excellent books , the Irish American experience - Andrew Greeley - who I also like as a novelist - has one about the rise of Irish Americans. The Jewish experience in America is best explained in The American Jewish Experience edited by Jonathan D. Sarna There are more but you know what I mean.... We are such a large country that one book does not cut it.

Her latest one is EXCELLENT!!! It is her best yet. I have traveled through that part of Canada and while it does not give you the best view of it, the plot shows you a side to that history - and North America's we never knew.(well me anyway) It is fascinating!

I took this advice and am now on the last Jack Reacher book and on the waiting list at our library for the new one coming soon to a library near you.

The History Book Club sent me a new book yesterday that I started reading. It's called The Third Reich at War by Richard J. Evans.

It looks to be a pretty good read, just wondering if anyone here has read it?

They also sent me a book about the search and trial of Adolf Eichmann. That one sounds interesting, too. The name of the book escapes me at the moment.
