Twix has been in heat for the past few days, so made sure not to let her outside because I don't want a pregnant cat. I was going to get her spayed in three days on the eighth, and it would be a bummer if she got pregnant. Now the bad part somes in. Someone left the door open and Twix escaped outside. She came back no longer in heat with a black and white tuxedo (male, I think,) trailing behind her. I fear the deed has been done. Now, here's the question. When cats mate, does the female get pregnant every time for sure? If I bring her in, would the vet spay her even though she might be pregnant? I really don't want to have to take care of all of her kittens, I was going to go to the shelter and pick out a friend for her so I'd only get one instead of a whole litter.

EDIT:: I put this in the wrong plce by accident... how exactly do I move it?

from memory, female cats can mate with several males to produce none to many kittens possibly each with a different father.

ovulation occurs only on withdrawal of the tom's parts from your female cat

If you keep her inside (as much as poss anyway) then you may get only one or two kittens depending on how many males she's done the deed with.

but I'll leave definitive answers for those here who are very well versed in these matters

The chances are very, very good. It only takes once.

Most vets will if they aren't far along into their term. I would check with your vet and if you know the date she escaped, tell them - they will let you know if they can spay her.

Spay her first ... and then get her a companion after she recovers.

Don't know if another Mod moved it for you already, but it seems to be in the right place ... that's what the Pregnant Cats and Kitten Care Forum is for here at TCS.

I think if you have a spay app in 3 days time, you will be fine getting her spayed, just make sure you warn the vet. And if you dont want to have to bring another litter of kittens into the world, then it really is the best thing to do, there are already enough cats needing homes.

I would contact your vet as Gaye suggested...if she only recently got out and the vet is still willing to spay her...I would go ahead with the spay surgery.

You can still spay her on the 8th even it it "took" - don't worry - better then having another litter on top of the one she just had. Keep her totally confined till Thursday - do let the vets know of her escape tho!

Go ahead and spay her, at this point if she did take the kits will be extremely tiny and barely visible, so it shouldnt be major surgery.

No there isn't. Which is why the BEST thing to do is to keep all intact cats indoors until they are spayed/neutered.
