Yep I think all cats do that, The well cat book by Terri McGinnis (a really good book about cats) calls them Greebleengs...I think they're actually our angels watching out for us. Or could be reporting on us to the great feline in the sky on how we treat our little furbabies. What's really amazing is that they are focused on something, definately staring. eyes dialated. Weird huh !! Some cats do it more than others. When I pick up my guys they always stare at the ceiling, and seem to follow something around up there. Some have said they can actually see wind or breeze currents. I've always wondered why they don't react to music but do react to your voice, and, mine can sit right in front of the tv and don't pay any attention to it, but, will sit and stare at my monitor by the hour. I have one who occasionally sits on my keyboard and leaves an email to whomever I'm talking to. They are forigners too, I know this cuz they have they're own language, and names for each other. Still can't figure out why they want to sit with me when I'm on the throne, maybe they're worried I'll say goodbye cruel world, and flush myself..Mike Medford, Ore

You have a guardian angel, read Silvia Brown, or watch Montel Williams on Wednesdays. Mike Medford Or

A couple of natural explanations you might want to consider, before thinking it's something else....

I have this really great book by a cat psychologist, "All my patients are under the bed" or something like that. Anyway, there's a story about a "suicidal" cat, who would stare at walls and then run into them headfirst, repeatedly, nearly breaking his neck. It was mice in the walls. They got rid of the mice, they got rid of the behavior.

The running around like crazy? Totally normal for cats. It's even programmed into "Sims 2: Pets," heh. I think it has something to do with burning off excess blood sugar.

Back arching... I have to ask if this is after you've done the same thing each time, or something involving fragrance. Maybe you put on lotion at night, and suddenly there's this person in the house that LOOKS like you, but doesn't smell anything like you. Cats recognise things more by smell than sight. Getting my cats professionally washed and groomed, they'll come back smelling like shampoo, and the other will freak out and hiss and attack like there's a new cat to introduce, for a few days. Poor kitty came back from the vet after one day smelling like sick and alcohol and strange people, and my other cat is still very wary of her.

Which is not to say that something might not be weird. Just putting it out there for you.

Oh! ...And look up "hypnagogic hallucinations." It's really interesting stuff.

To those that were talking about dreams that take place in the room you're sleeping:

I have those all the time, do your happen when you are either first asleep or right before waking up? because that is when mine are and i just found out that i am actually hallucinating and that is why it is in the room! Not to freak you out or anything but if you have any other weird sleep things, then you should look up sleep disorders because I would have never thought that i had one... i just thought i had weird dreams, but supposedly its some nerological problem.

I just read a little about that and it's very interesting. Crazy stuff our minds and bodies can do to us... Or maybe it's science's way of trying to make sense out of it?

For me they happen at different times when I sleep, it is usually never the same. I know people are alot more likely to hallucinate and whatnot during REM. I also have lucid dreams on a nightly basis and have had them since I was a teen. I just never knew what they were until a few years ago hehe.

That's not so uncommon, you pop out of sleep while still partially in REM. Usually this is called night terrors or \tsleep paralysis if you can't move. I've had that happen once, I woke up suddenly but my brain wasn't fully awake so it looked like the shadows in the room with little things dancing around. It was weird but I recognized what that was as soon as I was awake.

The other stuff I've dealt with I was 100% awake and sometimes not the only person in the room. There was a few cases I heard stuff that I wish could be explained away as mice, even if it meant the mice would have been the size of a medium sized dog or larger

Now that would be scary (The Food Of The Gods anyone?)

As I've said, animals can sense things but so can you, so you shouldn't let their behavior creep you out and convince you something is there. If you've been living in a place for years you would know, it's hard to miss unless you're as perceptive as a brick.

Cats are naturally a bit odd anyways. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has cats that will chase their own shadow or in Sho's case, suddenly become very jumpy and afraid of a black fuzzy on the floor.

As far as "rational" explaination. Sorry I'm no help. I do believe in spirits and I do believe children and animals can see them. I myself feel spirits so I know they are there.

My vet recently told me the same thing. Puppy will actually meow at walls and act like he's hallucinating. He may have a neurological problem, but it's hard to diagnose. Our vet said he's seen cats with similar symptoms, and in many cases, it turned out to be very tiny mice in the walls. He said his previous patients have been able to hear mice, even when the owners had absolutely no clue they were there.

My cat Mordecai (Morty) does this every night around 10:30PM. My boyfriend and I call it Ghostbusting cause he appears to be chasing something invisible. I think that he is just getting anxious for my boyfriend to return home from work. He gets home shortly after. But it is pretty funny. You would think that someone tied something to his tail or something.
