Do cats have control of their tails? I wondered this as my cat, laying on the desk in front of me, keeps hitting me in the face with his tail. Is he doing it on purpose, or not?

That's a good question and I'd like to know too. Sometimes I'll pretend to be trying to catch Bijou's tail and he'll swish it back and forth past my fingers like he was playing with me.

If it were one of mine, I'd have to say yes...they LOVE to annoy me by hitting me in the face or stickin it in my food... knowing when they do that, they'll probably get to eat my dinner

I think they do..I think its kind of like facial expressions for us. You can tell how they feel by what their tail is doing, so I think they do control it..but also its based on their mood so they control it to an extent. Like for instance, if we get angry our face shows it..same thing with a cat. Their tail shows their mood.

They sure do have control of the tail and here's an interesting tidbit I came across. The male can rotate his p*nis 360 degrees! Woo hoo!

I think so...Alix has a particular way of waving just the top half of her tail when she's thinking, or wanting something...my cats have different tail movements when they are mad, and when they are feeling playful

I'm going to have to be the dissenting opinion here... while I think they have some control of their tails, a lot of times, Wonton chases his own tail, and the way he acts, its like he doesn't quite have control of it - he'll grab it with his paw, it'll flick away, he'll grab it again... makes me wonder how much control of it they really have. R and I joke that his tail "has a mind of it's own".

I always wondered that too! Kahu will walk past us and he will put his tail on our legs and he will kind of rub them with it. Peedoodle sorta hits us with his tail. Its quite cute. I also wondered about the chasing their tails too - maybe they are just bored!

Interesting site
I do know they have control over their tails, but I happen to believe that that's most of the time, not all of the time.
