Why are kittens de-wormed before being adopted?
As a precaucion because most will have worms.
Do all kittens have worms?
Usually, but not always. Depends if fleas are present
How do you know if your cat/kitten has worms?
Tapeworms are the most common and you will see them around their anus (look like pieces of rice) or in their bedding when they dry up (look like sesame seeds).
Do adult cats get worms?
Yes, if fleas are present
How do cats/kittens get worms?
Tapeworms, by ingesting a flea
How many different kinds of worms are there in cats?
Tapeworm, hookworm, roundworm, ringworm
What happens to the cats whose worms are not diagnosed or treated?
Tapeworms are not life threatening and some cats like strays and ferals can live forever with them and not have any problems. In small kittens it can be deadly because the worms suck all the nutrients from the kitten

I dont know much about the other kinds of worms but some searching on Google will probably answer most of your questions.

Thank you Sicycat. I guess that is something I don't have to worry about with Dusty. She is an adult, and she's never had a flea. They don't like her for some reason.

Well that's great!! However, let me just tell you that all it takes is for them to eat one single flea. I have never seen fleas in my house but Zoey has had worms before (once when I brought Saki home from the shelter) and Saki had worms last year. They are both indoor cats! But trust me you will know if he ever gets them because they're very visible and gross
lol.

Most stray cats will have worms - just because of the fact they are living on the streets/country. So in turn, any kittens they produce will have worms as they are passed on to the kittens in-vitro (especially the roundworms).

If you have a pedigree mom and dad who have never had worms, then the kittens will not have worms if there are no fleas present in the house - if so, then the kittens can get tapeworms (which if left untreated will kill the kitten).

Funny thing was that Ling who was born outside (her mom was a barn cat) was tested when she got her shots/spayed and she NEVER had any worms! The house we were in - we never even saw any fleas on the cats or the dog!
