I think it is very suspicious the way John acted when confronted with questions, and then apologizing for causing an inconvenience. If he just needed time to himself for awhile, he would probably just say that.
To me that is more convincing than no one being able to find proof.

In my state, hospitals and morgues aren't allowed to give out information about who is staying there (due to HIPAA, which I believe is a national law). There would be no way to verify that Amber was or wasn't at the hospital, and it's possible that the people answer the phones saying "no, they aren't here" instead of "I can't give out that information" (I've had that said to my husband about my own mother when she didn't think to give the hospital my husband's name, my husband said they told him she wasn't there). And I also know that obits aren't published for every death in my area, either... so that wouldn't be a sure indication. Searching the internet for a person is tricky... not everyone is in the phone book, even! I wouldn't rely on internet records to confirm someone's existence or not. The only thing that would come close would be to do a search for an address... those usually come up, and you can find out if an address is commercial or residential.
Regardless of that, I do think it was a hoax and I didn't post in her threads because of my suspicions. The whole situation just seemed off to me. I am told I have good intuition about people... who knows.
I feel bad for all of you that mourned for her and the baby... just remember what a large community this is, and that anything can happen!
Good idea, except if "they" really wanted to get back on, all they'd have to do is change internet providers, and there ya go. Sorry, I know that's not good news...
Wow. I really haven't been on TCS anywhere near as much as I'd have liked to be lately, and had totally missed this whole story. The only reason I even clicked on the thread is the first Amber and John I thought of was the the bobcat and her owner (isn't his name John?). I'm so sorry to hear of this, whether the story turns out true or false. The people in this world amaze me sometimes.

I can't believe you guys have made 19 pages since yesterday. I'm only up to page to so i thought id reply now. I hope this isn't real. Why would someone lie about their partner dying? I really hope John didn't do that. He's given so much information out about the baby and everything that it should be real. I dont remember any of Ambers other posts except for the one where she posted the belly pics. I'm just really confused and hope we get answers

God i just realised if that happened to me no one on here would know because i am not personal friends or anything here. Unless my bf logged on under me name. Just remembering someone elses post about who would inform you if something happened to me. Hopefully it wont be till im into my 80s but it's still scary =\\

Everything else people have mentioned either don't really indicate it's a hoax (no obit or hosp records) or could just be chalked up to the variability that people exhibit when dealing with grief.
I'm just ealizing how gullable we have been I mean how could someone who has only been a member for 3 months have had such an effect on us.

You, like me, don't post in the The Cat Lounge with chit chat. I think a lot of friends are made there. I'm just not like that, but I've made friends in the Breeder's Forum.
In fact, for being here two years, you don't post very often given the time you've been here! I feel like a chatterbox compared to your post count!
So don't feel bad... there are a lot of us that aren't known in this particular forum. I haven't even had a Spotlight yet and I am quite perturbed.
Just kidding!
I'd also like to thank those members who looked into this for all of us.
Why "he" "she" or "they" did what they did will probably always be a mystery.
I can't imagine what kind of pleasure someone would get out of playing with the emotions of others.
If their goal was to get money from people, they failed.
If they did it for the attention, then they need help.
If their goal was to sit back and laugh while everyone else was so upset and saddened thinking about the death of a young Woman and a Motherless little Girl then I suppose they succeded in that at least.
One thing I don't think they counted on, was how close all of this was going to bring the other members of this site and best of all think of all the animals that were helped by the donations made by members.
Whether it was money, food, toys, time, litter or newspapers to line cages.
So many animals were helped....I'll bet they didn't count on that and they CAN NOT take credit for it...the people who donated are the ones who should take the credit.
If you couldn't donate something but you shed some tears, then you should be proud of yourselves and take credit for that because it shows you are a kind, decent human being with a heart...something they can't say.
I can't speak for everyone here, but if "they" thought..for whatever reason... they could shake my faith that most people are truely good and decent then they failed.
I came to this site one night in November because I wanted to give a home to a stray male cat and I didn't know a thing about male cats...I've had cats all my life, but they've always been female.
All I received was help and hope and good wishes and people thanking me for giving him a home.

I was just thinking the same thing. I've been a member for over a year and have only met one person in RL.
It's sad that we all felt like we got to know this couple and maybe because their lives were so complex we got invested in their story. Only to find out that is it either a hoax or a very scary attempt to profit from a tragedy.
I hope that if this is one person they realize how many people they hurt with their lies and that they should seek out help for their obvious mental condition.

The sad part about all this is when I called the phone number I had and it went into voicemail it said "Hi, You've reached Amber........"
To be honest this 'story' doesn't surprise me in the least.
Nobody should feel bad for being taken in by this scam,
I think a lot of us,myself included have seen people scamming
on here and exposed them for the liars they are,I personally
think that if the threads exposing these 'people' were left on the board
for ALL members and potential scammers to see,Then these 'stories' wouldn't
escalate into major drama's like this.
But that's not my decision to make,That's upto the 'mods'.(not having a dig at all

I thought it was him that injured her and I thought it suspicious he came on here
posting about his injured hand,saying he hit the wall????I got the impression he was
setting up his alibi.
I dunno, I don't easily trust either.
There is one thing I have learnt from this,It is very difficult to prove
you are who you say you are and It just goes to show you can't trust
anyone,however much you think they are your friend.
and now I'm paranoid

Very well said. I came here trying to get help and support for a dying cat. I was beside myself with grief and fear. I finally felt like I have found a community that understand how important our animals are to us and how much it hurts when they are sick or die. I will always be grateful for that support. No one who is this cruel will ever make me feel anything different for TCS. That would be the real tragedy if that happened.
First thank you to Alycia, Nikki and the third member who spent so much of their own time to expose this hoax, bravo to you for listening to your instincts, as well as a thank you to Anne for telling us

Please, no offence but Tammy had NO idea this was a hoax. She is a VERY good friend of mine and I can PERSONALLY assure you she did NOT know until informed her of what I found out.. When I told her, she went into a total emotional meltdown. She had made the baby a blanket and planned on sending it to Amber. Please? Don't accuse ANYone on this board of "knowing" it was a hoax the whole time.
The reason she hasn't been on is because she is extremely distrought over this whole thing. She is also dealing with some personal issues at the time.
Let's not play the blame game with this whole situation.
I researched for a couple days about this and informed Anne and a few other members of my findings. I had Nikki call also so that everyone would see I wasn't the only one who found it.
