I just saw this thread because I left work early today. I really don't know what to say either. I want to thank Anne and everyone else who has taken the trouble to look into this for all of us. I'll be looking for any further information.
If this is a hoax, I regret making a donation to an animal shelter in memory of Amber, but I do NOT regret making the donation. That is something good that has come out of this...

I had read through some of the Amber/John posts, but didn't comment because it was a little too strange, with him coming back here to report her death. Also the circumstances of her death made no sense to me with medical advancements where they are today.
Anyone in addition to me think that Amber and John are the same person?

I'm absolutely speechless and have been reading through this in shock and disbelief. And if I'm honest....I'm hurt. There is an implicit trust that goes along with a good, open and honest forum like TCS. Here is the place where I have always found the greatest advice, compassion and support in the good times and bad.
To think that someone would abuse that trust and compassion is hard to stomach for me. I would hate to think that the next time when someone posts with a problem....I might not offer them that trust implicitly (or at least hold some scepticism).
Out of this tough situation i have seen the greatest outpouring of love and compassion from the people on this site, which only reaffirmed for me that this is a good and wonderful site, full of some of the most amazing and strong people I've ever met. There was something about this whole thing that seemed fishy to me. I had no idea who John and Amber were. I thought that since this Stan guy was her fiancee that John was her dad. But that didn't make sense either so I wondered what the relationships were between the three of them. This whole thing makes me sick.

Yes, that is what it is: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The hospitals are by law, not allowed to give any information unless waived by the patient.
I am rather new and was not familiar with any of this story but I don't want to repeat what many others have said about how you all came together and helped, cared and cried. Whether it is a hoax or not the important message here is how you all came together. Being new, there is nothing here that scares me away.
Has anyone been able to do any tracing with IP addresses of the two user accounts?
I IMed my husband about all this when I first saw the thread. His reaction:
I believe that Anne or someone with administrative access can access past logs and confirm whether or not Amber and John were online at the same time with the same IP from the same computer and whether they switched back & forth.

Emily- Colin said the same exact thing to me as your hubby did to you when he heard about all this and saw me calling the funeral homes, hospitals and stuff to verify it.
