Hey all..

My chessy has diarrhea pretty bad.. She has trouble holding it till she gets to the litter box. So she keeps leaving trails... gross..

Anyways...

I know why she has it... she won't stop eating the dog food.. Whatever the dogs won't eat, she'll eat their food, becuase they get wet food everyday.. And well the cats don't because I have such a problem keeping their stomachs adjusted so they have normal poop..

Any ideas?????

Well im not good at things like this but
when ur dogs eat make sure they it all and if they dont throw it awayu so chesse cant eat it
If your cats a boy , dog food might contribute to crystals which is really quite bad

I agree with Raju. You shouldn't free feed especially with more than one animal in the house. Pick a certain time of the day to feed ur dogs and you can even do this with your cat, just feed them at that time and if they don't eat it all and walk away then take the food away. Don't feed them any more or less the next feeding. They will learn that if they are hungry, they will eat it all while its their. Also, perhaps they leave their food cause its too much? Are you feeding a recommended dosage?

We don't free freed any of the animals. The dogs usually eat right when we get home at night. They are rottis and are soo fenicky.. They both were abused prior to us getting them from shelters. So they gets 3 cups of dry and 1 can of wet a day...

Usually they eat it all.. But the problem is they let the cats bully them around.. I know sounds silly,, there like 75 lbs and my cats are a whole whopping 7lbs.. But they have nails w/ soft claws,, but that dogs don't know that..
So i'm yelling at them all the time to stay away from the dogs food, and the dogs let Chessy eat of there bowl while their eating.. She's very sneaky.. It a constant battle with her.. I've got 3 cats, and 2 dogs,, and Chessy and Seren, just love the dog's wetfood.. It's a pain too keep them away,, but Seren is to scared,, but Chessy isn't scared of a thing..

If they are eating dog food and having diarrhea, this isn't working.

If your cat likes wet food why don't you try to good wet food for them - you could also add a tbsp. bit of canned pumpkin to the wet food (not the pie filling kind - just the plain pureed pumpkin) which should help firm up the cat's stool.

Any change in food can affect some cats until their system gets used to the new food. Maybe you could add some wet food to their dry to get them started on wet. I also wouldn't leave the dog food down after he has finished eating. You could also feed the cats on a higher area where the dog can't reach so he doesn't get into their food as well.

Cheesy is telling you something. They want wet food. I would put cheesy behind closed doors while you feed the dogs.

I was gonna suggest the same as crazyforinfo. Get cheesy away from their to em from eating the dogs food. It may be a pain but less of a pain as cleaning up after their mess

i know you think it's the food, & it might be... but my sister gives her cat about a tablespoon of wet dog food everyday as a treat, & he doesn't have any problems. how much is she eating? have you ruled out worms, bacterial infections, etc. as a cause? Java had a bacterial overgrowth in her intestinal tract that took 2 rounds of antibiotics to clear up, plus a round of bene-bac before she was back to normal... & she was eating good, high-quality wet & dry cat food.
if you've been to the vet, you might try the bene-bac, especially if the pumpkin doesn't work.
