Did you hear about the earthquake that rocked the UK on Sunday night? I slept through it.

Here is a link to the most exciting pictures (he he):

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2276188.stm

And a quote:

Becky, who was awake at the time, said: "I didn't think it was an earthquake at first, I thought it was my cat jumping onto my bed - she usually makes the bed shake.

Anyone here experienced a real earthquake?

Well it certainly woke me up, the whole bed was shaking but when I woke Richard all he said was your dreaming and be quiet

I was able to look all smug when we saw it on the news in the morning.

I'm glad none of you were hurt! Living in Iowa I have never experienced an earthquake...that has to be so terrifying!!

Living quite a way from Brum - I didn't feel it. Although I did wake up suddenly at about 1-ish but I wasn't sure what it was that woke me up. Maybe it was a slight tremour . . .

I do feel for the guys in Dudley though. I spent 2 years in Stourbridge at art school (5 miles or so from Dudley) and had a ball in the West Mids. Is Dudley zoo still open? I bet is scared all the animals a treat if it is.

Wibble - what did it feel like? Was there rumbling and stuff or just shaking?

Although it scares me silly, I'd like to be able to experience a 'small' quake just to know what it was like.

I woke up just before the trembling started. I was lying there, wondering what woke me (kids, cats, dogs) and then the whole house shook. We had one of a similar size last year so I knew what it was - very alarming!

Went through the house once it had finished and dogs, kids, cats were all asleep and completely unconcerned.

See, this is one of the reasons that I love where I live. Colorado hardly ever gets earthquakes, and they are usually so small no one notices. Obviously no hurricanes or tidal waves. We do get tornados, but living as close to the mountains as I do, they almost never hit anywhere near me.

Wibble, that's so strange that the animals didn't even wake up. Animals are well known to be affected by earthquakes even before they happen. Ironically, today on my Cat-A-Day Calendar it says, "Cats can become agitated hours before an earthquake occurs. No one knows exactly why, but it's thought that they may even more sensitive to changes in the earth than our modern instruments."

I've just been speaking to my friend who lives near Cardiff in South Wales, and she said it was quite pronounced there. She said it was like a huge juggernaut rumbling past and the floor in her flat was vibrating.

She also has a cat (the one with Kidney failure I posted about a while back), and Morris slept right through it!!

However she did mention that in China, cat owners (are there any)?, are asked to report any strange behaviour to seismologists as cats can sense around 24 hours before a strike that a quake will hit and react by either whimpering and hiding, our going scatty as anything.

Come to think if it, the cats were behaving a little wildly on Sunday . . .

Well now tornados...THAT I do unfortunately know about. We have the constant fear of them here during tornado season. I remember a really bad one about 3 years ago, very near where I live, that was so bad...I was driving to town and looked over where this big house used to be....and there was NOTHING there! It was just wiped out!!!! But the house just a quarter of a mile away was okay. And my x-best friends parent's house was hit, and though it didn't take the whole house, it caused alot of damage and ripped the whole roof off their barn and threw trees into their house...etc. I am scared of them, but it is soemthing I have always lived with.
