Shock and tragedy....My Emily is gone...

At about 4 o'clock this afternoon, I said goodbye to my beloved girl Emily. Today I came home for lunch and she was lying on the floor breathing heavily and not really moving. I tried to get her up, even tried to play with her with the laser light which is her favorite thing in the world, and she just lay there. I immediately took her back to work with me and we did some x-rays and an exam which showed dehydration and pale gums. Her temp was 95...very low. Then she started really hard open mouth breathing and we put her in an oxygen chamber. The x-rays showed an enlarged heart and fluid on the lungs. We gave her some medicine to try and help but she just kept getting worse. She was suffering and she had about 15 more minutes to see if the meds would kick in but God decided it was time....she had a seizure and well I guess I got hysterical because I got escorted out of the room so they could work on her. I kept peeking around the doorway and the tech looked up at me and shook her head....a few minutes later she died. She was 5 and a half years old, and had shown NO clinical signs of being sick prior to today. Indoors only, fed all the right food, given anything that was good for her....They are doing an autopsy to see exactly what the reason is, because if it is genetic, then I have to keep a closer eye on Cubby, her sister.
I say she had no clinical signs. But what struck me on the way home, was that for about the last 3 months or so, Timmy has taken to chasing her a lot, stalking and picking on her.....it is my belief that he may have sensed something that I couldn't and was picking on her weakness as animals will in the wild. It makes sense also because he was feral when I got him, (I have had him 2 years and he is still not all the way tame yet) more in tune to wild behavior....I'll have to see if he picks on anyone else in that way and maybe he'll be my indicator that something is wrong.....not entirely sure of that logic but it makes sense to me.
I am awaiting the results of the autopsy. I am in shock right now, it all happened so fast. I had no indication whatsoever that she was even sick. Even as I sat with her body, it just looked like she was sleeping....like any minute she would wake up and be my naughty, sweet little girl again. Everyone who met Emily wanted her...everyone loved her. I will always love her.

Condolences on your sad loss of such a beautiful calico cat. Yes, the without-warning losses can leave you dizzy and bewildered with conflicting emotions; sending {{{{mega prayers and vibes}}}} that Cubby has been spared. Emily knew how valiantly a whole team fought to save her life here; but yes, she got called home too soon for us; please keep us updated on how you are doing. Hugs, Susan

I am so sorry for your loss! It is so difficult when she seemed so healthy & she was so young. I will send prayers that it is nothing genetic & that Cubby is OK.

It is so hard, it still seems unreal....I keep looking for her and she is not here. I keep expecting her to walk into the room at any moment. I have 6 other cats left, but it still seems so empty here without her. Thank you everyone for your kind comments. It makes it a little easier knowing I have friends who understand. I haven't even told my mom (who I come to with everything) yet because she's not an animal person and probably wouldn't say much about it.

It stinks when your own family doesn't understand what a loss it is. I know, my family is the same way. We're here for you! I'm always a PM away if you need anything...
