Did you hear about the Israeli President?

It's all over the headlines here, as he was now officially charged with rape, no less.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/24/wo.../24israel.html

People here are very angry and part of what they accuse him of is dragging the name of our country through the mud all over the world. I was just wondering, does this story even make it into the headlines in other countries? Is this something you even hear about?

Yep saw it on the TV news, but they did not go into any details about the case.

Yep, it was in the last two headlines newsletters from CBC (four a day). Here's the link if you'd like to see how it's playing on other screens.

There has been some coverage on the BBC, not a lot and mostly on The World Service.

While this is a terrible tragedy on a personal level, the seriousness and evenhandedness of the way it's being handled can only be respected.

Interesting, thanks. People here are under the impression that this gives Israel a bad name. I thought it was handled fine too.

It's been making the first or second pages of newspapers in Germany, Anne, and has also been mentioned on the evening news.

Hopefully it takes more than one man to completely ruin a countries reputation. (Look what we've got for a Prime Minister!!!)

I saw something about it through AOL news on the net, but the reporting was pretty straightforward, and if it makes anyone or thing look bad, it is only the man accused, and not the country as a whole.

The BBC website has covered this for weeks and the International pages of The Guardian have had a field-day with this story. I'm glad he has finally been charged given the fact that this story has been running for weeks and if he hadn't have been charged Israel might have looked worse
btw can I just point out that Israel's reputation is a lot more effected by it's treatment of Palestinians

I haven't seen it yet in the US, but then I have been focusing on Bush's latest pack of lies, I mean state of the union address.

Your politicians don't sound much better than ours, but he does say he is innocent and pretty vehement about it. Perhaps he is. Time will tell.

How is Sharon doing? The last I heard he is on life supports. Why don't they let him go?
I saw it on The Drudge Report on-line.

I can only imagine the anger of the people in Israel. I'm sorry Anne.

It seems we all have wonderful leadership.

I've seen it through google's news service, but it hasn't come up on NPR to or from work. I don't get home in time to watch the national news, so I pop on CNN. It could have been on the crawler, but 8-Bit likes to attack it.

I don't think they treat Sharon any differently from any other patient. I feel like you, that he should be given the opportunity to pass away in peace.

Our "love affair" with the Palestinians goes both ways, I'm afraid. I sometimes wonder if the international media even mentions the fact that Israeli towns come under rocket attacks from Gaza on a daily basis. Not to say that Israel is playing this smart or "right" either. Anyway, that's for another thread, but if you like, I cover some of my political views in my blog - http://israelimom.blogspot.com

I disagree with your first sentence. I see news reports painting israel out to be this innocent victim thats just trying to defend itself in a sea of enemies... Not buying it!

I also see reports painting palestenians as the poor underdog that is being kicked under the table by big bad israel... Not buying THAT either!

What I think is the sad truth is that innocent people on BOTH sides are suffering as a result of the militant few on BOTH sides who can't be reasoned with. Maybe its just me being optimistic and even a bit naive, but I tend to think that the majority of the population just wants to fighting to end and to be able to move on with their lives in peace.

The major new reporting agencies in the states are terribly disappointing. I agree, they don't care about the truth. All they care about is ratings...

see.

The story has been covered in Finland too. The correspondent who wrote the last article I read had the feeling that people in Israel are generally quite fed up with their politicians at the moment, because of their personal misbehavior and politics as well.
