Yesterday Mia got me really good. She tried to run out the door and I grabbed her.In the process, I scared her and she scratched my right arm when I went to pick her up. I cleaned it with alchol yesterday and today. But, it is getting red and warm to the touch. What can I do other than go to the Dr for it?

that's the problem it is getting infected. It's really warm and red as well as swollen. Good news, I caught her beofre she could go out and maybe get hit.

Try putting an antibotic cream on it, I would also keep it very clean
post #6 of 32
I would try a dose of peroxide on it. If it bubbles there is a bit of infection otherwise the peroxide won't make it worse. It looks like the site of the scratch is just a little inflamed

here's another pic of it

gonna try the peroixide

I agree with the peroxide idea. It always works for me. Just pour it over it several times a day and keep it clean otherwise.

At this point, I'm willing to try anything!! It burns and it hurts. She caught me off guard, other wise I would've protected my arm more.

I would stick a band aid on it after putting peroxide on it.
It doesn't look bad to me. You can try ice too if it is still hot.

Cat scratches HURT, and do get infected easily, and quickly...so take care, and keep your eye on it. Soap antibacterial on it 2-3 times a day, and let it breathe!

Thanks guys!! It burns more than anything right now.

Only use peroxide ONCE!... The more you put on it, the more it kills the GOOD bacteria that kills the bad... DH has a nasty scar because he kept pouring peroxide on it..

I agree, use the peroxide but keep an eye on it. If you see any red streaks running out from the scratches, see a doctor - that's a sign of blood poisoning. When we tried to catch our Simba to isolate him for socialization, he bit all three of us, my hubby, our daughter and me. Hubby and I had no problem, but our daughter got blood poisoning and had to have antibiotics.

Yours doesn't look too bad as yet so just keep an eye on it.

Hey Tammy ....... just going to say OUCH! ....... Laura and Kiko try to climb my back all of the time and if their back claws are not cut, they mark me like that.

It doesnt look infected, just inflamed, keep an eye on it, if it looks worse, take another pic for us to evaluate.

No need to go to the doctor for that.

Make yourself a saline solution to clean it with.

Boil water and mix 1 cup of water to 1 tsp of salt. Put it in a sterile jar and keep it in the fridge.

Clean the scratches with the salt water. Pat it dry. Put some Polysporin ointment (over the counter at the Pharamacy) on it. Cover with a sterile guaze pad.

Keep the dressing dry.

Change the dressing twice a day or more if it gets wet, cleaning it with the saline solution each time.

My main concern is Cat Scratch Fever. I've heard it's pretty rough and the main antibiotic they use is Penicillin to help clear it up.I'm HIGHLY allergic to Penicillin.

I am allergic, too.

I dont know what it takes to get cat scratch fever, but when mine were kittens they use to come from the floor to the couch via my legs and I literally had scratches all over me. My Mother used to freak out all the time when she saw me saying I was going to get Cat scratch Fever. I dont know if I was lucky or its hard to get

Annie got me pretty bad the other day. It looked like that for a couple days. Now its fine not red anymore. But if you are worried about it I would go to the doctors. Ive gotten so many cat scratches over the years that I just keep them really clean and so far it just hurts bad and stops being red after a few days. Anyways sending you some healing vibes and lots of prayers!

A while back one of my cats had a seizure and afterwards I was cleaning his face off and he went crazy and bit and scratched me really bad. The bite was very painful and on my knuckle so I went to the doctor. Besides giving me an antibiotic he told me to soak the bite and scratches in epson salt and he gave me an iodine sponge to scrub them with and an antibiotic cream. It really helped me a lot and healed very fast.

I've had scratches become infected with the red marks traveling off them. I can say yours looks inflamed but nowhere near what it would look like if it was infected. I would just scrub mine with antibacterial soap 2 times a day and that was it. (The one that got infected was on my foot. It cleared up when I opened it and scrubed it out)

Good luck and I hope your arm feels better soon.

I just scrubbed it until it opened again.I cleaned it with Antibacterial soap....Dial...and then put some Bag Balm on it with some gauze over it.
It hurt to scrub it, but hoepfully it will heal now.
Thanks for all the good vibes!!!

Well, it hurts worse this morning. So, if it doesn't do better within the next day or so, I'll go to the Dr for it.

Murphy has gotten me pretty bad a few times-- I found that antiseptic swabs work pretty well. I clean the area with peroxide, then apply the antiseptic. Avon makes a travel case of the swabs. They were about 5 bucks, and theres about 20 of them in the box. They are really handy too. They look just like
Q-tips-you snap one end of them off to get the antiseptic moving, then apply it with the other end. My scratches can look all red and inflamed like yours, and as soon as I apply that stuff the redness and swelling immediatly goes away It speeds up the healing process too
