I also have DirectTV when it was Primestar as well and haven't had any problems with it except in really nasty weather. Even then we still received some channels. I haven't heard anything about Dish Network or Comcast (except the prices are higher).

We have dish, and we also have basic cable so we can watch our local channels too.

We lose dish every time it gets bad weather.

But this is kinda funny, after Katrina came through last year, we had no power, we had our generator though. We fired that puppy up and turned on the air conditioner (just to get it cool in the house) and then we hooked up the tv and dish and sat around and watched some of the hurricane coverage.

We have Direct Tv for a little over 5 years now. As other people mentioned yes you do lose your satellite signal in bad weather but it is usually for a very short amount of time. I would reccommend that you get the repair/replacement plan for your equipment through direct tv. It will save you money in the long run and it is only around $6.00 a month. We have had some issues with our tivo boxes but we have not had to pay for the service calls and our tivo units were replaced.

The only bad problem with Direct TV is their lack of HD channels and the fact that their tivo units are not yet set up to get local channels in HD. Be very careful with Direct TV if you looking for HD we had a lot of problems with this.

I work in customer service for DirecTV, and for the number of customers we have, there are relatively few complaints, but there has been some problems lately with some of the refurbished receivers. They are replaced free if you happen to get one of those. The billing is a little confusing, but we are always glad to explain it to you and if there is a mistake, we will credit it, and often give a movie channel free for up to 6 months.

My parents have it. They don't have any major problems. Sometimes during bad weather it goes out. But they also live arounda lot of trees in their area.

how odd... mine's nothing like that. the local channels are their regular numbers, the channel guide works just fine, barring bad weather. if i were you, i'd call about that 2nd part - sounds like your receiver is having problems.

Yes, the tech should be able to tell you if you have a refurbished receiver. I don't think they are sending out that many because of the problems they have have had with them. If you don't want a refurbished one, just say so, and they will usually give you a new one. They are really a pretty good company when it comes to customer service. 2 missed installer appointments can mean up to a $200 credit if you know to ask for it and get irate enough to the CRG (customer retention group.) But of course, you didn't hear that from me.

We have Dish and we do have issues in bad weather. Some channels are fine and some are not.
We rented our system and I did have a head butt with them one time. The receiver was only working with one tv and they kept insisting I needed a service call ($99
). I stood my ground and told them to take back their system if they were going to charge me to service RENTED equipment and they backed down and sent me a new receiver. I guess I am fine with it now but have considered looking into Direct tv.

I keep hearing all your horror stories about Dish and you guys are all making me nervous now. Should i switch to Direct? I haven't had any problems at all. I've had it almost 2 years (not that long I know) and my friend has it too (installed at the same time). No problems. My receiver wasn't transmitting our local channels clearly when I first got it, so I simply made a call and they sent me a new one no questions asked (keep in mind local channels are not theirs and thus not their problem if they don't work, but they sent me one anyways). I've never really had any weather problems either.
Now I'm a bit nervous.

you will find that, in general, people who are unhappy are more likely to respond than people who are satisfied. this pretty much would apply across the board to any & all circumstances. so assume that there are people like me who are very happy with DirectTv who just haven't bothered to post.

I'll never get it here. Yeah it may be cheaper but I'm not that patient
Why I don't have Direct TV - they don't offer NESN HD (or FSNE HD). As much as I might complain about Comcast it's the best way to get my games.

I have Direct and love it. I have only lost the signal a couple times. One was during really heavy rain and the other was when it snowed and snow got stuck to the dish. I just stood on DH's shoulders and brushed it off with a broom.

If you're losing the signal a lot, the dish probably needs to be re-aimed. The closer it is to the correct aim, the harder it is to lose the signal in bad weather.
