Read it and loved it - though I thought that the last one was the best. Quite often the first book in a trilogy is the best, but this time it was the reverse.

I liked the first one best! By the end I felt it was getting too illogical and quasi-religious and there were too many subplots. But there were some great ideas in it, including the human/animal 'soul' relationships.

I agree! I really liked that idea.

In the U.S., the first book was called, "The Golden Compass." (I cried, too.) I hope the movie is good.

I read it, loved it, and can't wait for the movie.

I agree that Pullman had a bunch of subplots going on... especially in the final book. I *think* I remember being happy with how he tied up all of the loose ends, but it's been a while since I read them.

I heard the movie isn't going to address Pullman's view of the church, which I think is sad. The whole series deals with corruption in the church and faith/belief. I don't know if I can consider it an adaptation of The Golden Compass if that element is left out of the movie.
